so far my problem seems to possibly the spinner basket related. If we center the basket manually and then retry it goes into spin. Is there some sort of sensor that looks at the position of the spin basket that could be the problem????

I jumpered the lid switch and if I give the basket help to spin it will go and spin. Is there a start capacitor on the motor possibly????

add to last post i also noted that it doesn't always go into high spin

Sounds like a intermittent lid switch problem.
Open the control panel to view the lid switch .
Adjust the mechanism that pushes against the lid switch.

You may still have a bad lid switch not making consistent contact.

On a Whirlpool it is not adjustable. It must be replaced.

    No basket sensors.

Raise the control panel to access the lid switch quick connector.

Make a jumper wire to by-pass the lid switch and run your machine several loads with the jumper.

If it continues to be a problem your timer would be at fault.

If you have to help the basket start the clutch on the transmission is bad.

    It is replaceable.

Have you checked the lid safety switch? Even if it doesn't spin, the cycle timer will continue.

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,

There is likely to be a problem with either the lid solenoid/lock or the 'lid closed' sensor requiring a service engineer's attention I suggest. Sorry ;-0(

If this has assisted and/or clarified the situation for you please consider a 4 thumbs up on our rating.
Thanks and good luck!

Maytag Centennial: Not starting, maybe lid lock issue? How to install new magnetic lid latch? then is replacing lid lock next or could it be something entirely different? Help, please, and THANK YOU! I have a Maytag Centennial washer MVWC450XW3 that quit working last week. In hindsight, I could see that there had been a history of "stuff" going on with the washer, all around the lid lock;i.e. - last time it worked I had to select a couple of different cycles before it finally started. SO Far, I have tried to get the diagnostic codes but failed a bit at that. I THINK that I was getting an F5E1 error. I was however at least able to access the diagnostic menu, and notice TWO things: No matter what, the Lid Locked LED never comes on, ever. Next thing I notice is when I do a short cycle diagnostically, it never agitates or spins. It fills various temp water, does not agitate, then it seems to suck the water back out. IN the end, I ordered just the magnetic part of the lid lock (the part that is actually on the lid) because I could see mine was rusted all the way away, but am not too sure how to put it on. Therefore I just put it in the slot where it would go if I had installed it. Incidentally II asked my ma if she had noticed anything going on with the washer and she said No at first but then with prompting (she's 81) allowed that she had indeed noticed something wrong with the lid shutting so she had cleaned out that "little hole"{ very well and oiled it to make sure it was working. So again my two main questions are: How to install the lid latch, do I need to take out all of the screws around the glass? and Should I next move on to buying a lid lock part or could it be something entirely different?
