Which would be better: 2 Studio Projects C1's or one C1 and an AKG c3000b? I know the 3000 isn't very well respected but I'm sure it would sound good on something, right? Or maybe it has the same sound as the c1000 that I'm about to put on eBay. In that case, I'll take the two C1's. I would like a stereo pair of mics but I also want diversity. I cannot try these two out -- I'm buying online, so the typical "which one sounds better to you?" line won't work here. Thanks for the input.
<< You can't count on any two Shanghai mics to sound alike, but if you buy two that are sitting next to each other there's at least a chance that there weren't any huge production changes made between them.
I don't know about Shanghai mics, but the C1s are from 797 and then QC'd by PMI audio, a well respected distributor. The two that I have for sale sound identical and I've done stereo apps with them on numerous occassions, and they are in mint condition. The C3000 I have is not the greatest sounding mic, but like the poster said, there are SOME things that it will do fine on. Some. I swear, it'lll sound good on something. Get the C1s, they rock. LS

Personally I will recommend the Studio Projects, however I highly recommend you get a C1 and a C3, not 2 C1's.
In cardioid mode the C3 sounds like a C1 so you can do A-B type spaced stereo, but then as a different option you could put the C3 in figure of eight with the C1 in its cardioid mode to make a MS stereo pair.
having a multipattern mic really opens up the creative options when paired with a cardioid only mic. 2 multipatterns even better and at studio projects prices its more affordable to learn some great advanced mic tricks. And it will make you look really cool too. :-)

In Article < Why are you so determined to buy one or the other? Try two AT 4040. You'll get a much better ride. In fact, the new Audio Technica AE 5100 sounds at first blush like a winner as well.

A stereo pair can be useful, if the two specimens of a particular model are in fact identical or at least rather similar. I'm not experienced with the Studio Projects mics so I won't comment there. I would avoid the C3000 like the plague, it reall doesn't sound good on anything. At least, anything it sounds good on would sound better on just about any other mic. If anything, it sounds *worse* than the C1000.
You'd be better off buying another C1, or something entirely different. If you want variety, you should pick up a good, versatile dynamic mic. If you want stereo, pick up a pair of mics at the same time. You can't count on any two Shanghai mics to sound alike, but if you buy two that are sitting next to each other there's at least a chance that there weren't any huge production changes made between them.
You might also look at MXL, who seem to be doing better than most companies with the Chinese mics WRT quality control, price, and implementing decent electronics.

I would definitely try for different flavors. The C1 is good but starting out (which it sounds like you are) a pair of them is probably not the best way to go. I assume you were wanting a pair for stereo recording. I suggest learning mono first. Then if you do go stereo I think in most situations a pair of small diaphragm condensers would be better to start with. Unless you are planning on recording drums in a great room you probably won't have much need for a stereo pair of LD's and if you did you'd probably want something other than the two C1's. And don't rule out getting a good dynamic (or couple or three) such as an SM57, RE20 or MD421. I find these come in handy in rooms that are less than optimal where a condenser may only serve to bring out how bad the room really is.
