Question about GPS

9 Answers

I have a 2008 Garmin Nuvi 780 with the MSN cable antenna and the lifetime paid service. My problem is the green light on the auto cable plugin lights up but it still does send power to the GPS.I only can use the GPS by connecting it to my computer to charge the battery. It will work perfect for about 1 1/2 hours before the battery runs down.I tried a reset at the plugin with a small wire and a reset of the GPS device by sliding the off switch to left for 10 seconds.I do have some limited electronic skills. Thanks Harry Hitt NDNDRIFTER@gmail.com

I also did a firmware update that still did not fix the problem. The device worked for 14 months before this problem.

I tried connecting the GPS to my other vehicles but still have the same problem.

The charging jack on the Garmin is a known defect. It is a weak solder joint on the main controller board.

I have a 2008 Garmin - 17b819d.jpg
Repair will involve disassembling the unit to re-solder the pins to the board.
If its under warranty - send it in for repairs.
If not - disassembly and re-soldering is your only option.

Thanks for using FixYa

A hard reset is accomplished by pressing the right bottom of the screen and holding g while turning the unit on. After about 4 seconds the Garmin logo comes on, continue pressing the right bottom corner until the “Do you really want to erase all user data? No Yes” appears. Pressing Yes will return the unit to its out-of-box state.

Logic says that if it charges fine in the computer, but not in any car, the auto power cable is the problem - I assume you're not using the cradle. the plugin may be fine, but the cable to the GPS or the connector may still be bad. I'd suggest a new auto power cable.

The cigarette lighter power source may be defective... mine usually switches right on when i plug it in tho yours sounds like it is going straight to battery charge mode. after you plug it in... try sliding the power switch on for a second and see if that changes things

That sounds like a defective battery.

You should also test the power output to the GPS charger in your car, and verify that it stays within +or- .5 volts from what is indicated on the GPS charger socket.

Garmin 265wt I want to know if my garmin have a free lifetime traffic incluse

Yes, the nuvi 265WT comes with a lifetime license for US traffic. That doesn't guarantee that you have a station in your area that broadcasts traffic information, and you must use the special power cable (which contains the antenna) for it to receive anything. You won't see anything on the screen unless/until the nuvi recognizes a traffic signal.

Opening the Garmin Nuvi 350

Hi:
It can be easyto open. There is a couple of nuts behind the antenna, you have to remove them, then you need to remove the antenna, in order to do this you need to find a pin in the base of the antenna, and slide it to the center, and this free your antenna, then you can reach a couple a nuts located under the antenna, remove them and then you will be free to open your nuvi. I did this cause my power button was broken, I resolded and now is working pretty fine. the picture is my nuvi 350 opened.b67f991.jpg
