Computer hangs during pc recovery process

This is and compaq sr2011wm running xp media center. I start the pc recovery then when it gets to a screen it asks for the supplemental recovery disc. Once inserted the computer notes please wait then you wait and wait and wait and nothing. The acitivity lite flickers which made me think it was doing something but several hours later still no recovery??

You may need to swap the disc from one cd-rom to another.

Select models of Acer computers, with Microsoft Windows, have the ability to have the Operating System reinstalled from a hidden partition built into the computer.
Note: During the process, all data stored on your computer will be overwritten. This means all your files, such as email and photos, will be erased. Therefore, we recommend making a backup of all personal data before starting the recovery process.
To start the system recovery:
1.Restart the computer.
2.When the Acer logo appears on the screen, press the Alt and F10 keys repeatedly.
3.If you are prompted with a Microsoft Windows boot screen, press the Enter key.
4.After the system recovery application has loaded, follow the prompts to reinstall the Operating System.
If the ability to reinstall from the previous method is not available or fails, recovery of the Operating System will need to be from Recovery Media. If you do not have a set of Acer Recovery Media, you may purchase the set online from the Acer Recovery Media Order Form..
Note: If your computer does not have an internal optical disc drive, an external optical disc drive will be required in order to recover the Operating System using Acer Recovery Media.
1.Restart the computer.
2.When the Acer logo appears on the screen, press the F12 key repeatedly to enter the computer's Boot Menu.
3.Press the CD-ROM drive eject button and insert the disc labeled System CD.
4.Close the CD-ROM tray.
5.Refer to on screen instructions to select either CDROM or USB CDROM.
6.The computer will boot from the Acer Recovery Media
7.When prompted for the Recovery CD, remove the System CD and insert the Recovery CD.

Note: If there are multiple Recovery CDs, please insert the first of the Recovery CDs.

8.After the system recovery application has loaded, follow the prompts to reinstall the Operating System.
Note: if your computer is unable to run the Acer Recovery process, or errors occur during recovery, please contact Acer support.

Recovery is taking too long
If your computer stops responding after using the recovery program, do the following:

NOTE:If the computer appears to have stopped responding after restarting from a recovery, please wait, it may take several hours or longer to complete the initial Windows XP setup process, especially if a recovery was run from a recovery disc set sent by HP. A Standard recovery may also take longer, depending on how many files are stored in user accounts (like in My Documents ).

1 Exit the stalled recovery process by pressing the POWER button on the PC until the power turns off, this takes approximately five seconds.
2 Before recovering, disconnect personal media drives, printers, scanners, cameras, camera-type memory cards, and other devices that did not originally come with the PC.
3 If you are using recovery discs, be aware of the following items:
4 If you created the recovery discs using Recovery CD Creator, be sure to run the recovery from the same drive that you used to create the discs.
5 Clean the discs with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth wetted with distilled water. Wipe from the center of the disc to the outside edge. You may also use disc cleaning kits or disc restoration kits from your local computer store. These kits produce better results than using cloth and water.
6 You may also use available CD/DVD Drive cleaning kits to clean the laser reading lens of the CD or DVD drive.
Try running a full system recovery again from the hard drive by turning the on the computer and pressing the F10 key until a Recovery Screen appears. This performs the recovery from the hard drive.
7 If the recovery stops when recovering from the hard drive, use the section Disc errors occur during the recovery process to eliminate errors on the drive. Try recovering again after the disk errors are removed.

Most PC's built in this time frame no longer shipped with a separate set of recovery CD's. Instead, the manufacturer provided a separate partition on the hard drive that contained the recovery program. To access this program, you would first shut off the system and disconnect all peripherals other than your keyboard and mouse. Then start the computer, pressing the F10 key on your keyboard repeatedly as the HP/Compaq logo appears. A recovery menu would appear, giving you the option to perform either a standard recovery or, under the Advanced options, a destructive recovery. The standard recovery will attempt to repair the system, leaving any of your data files intact. The destructive recovery option erases everything, then restored the computer to its original, out of box configuration.
Unfortunately, the recovery partition is on the hard drive itself, so if your problem is due to a hardware failure rather than simply a software crash, the above steps will not work. If this is the case, you will need to contact HP/Compaq and request a restore CD. The following link will take you to their website, and walk you through the process of determining if a set of recovery discs are available for your PC. Select your operating system from the drop down menu and then follow the link labeled Recovery Media.

HP dv6000 turion processor. machine starts and all blue lights appear. dvd briefly lights and then machine turns off and then turns itself back on and repeats the process.

If he has a product key for the computer he can borrow an XP disc from a friend and reload it using his keyand it should be fine.
He should then create a restore disc and keep it.

Recovering during startup Use the following steps to perform a recovery from the hard drive :
  1. Backup files from the My Documents folder and from other folders you may have created.
  2. Disconnect all connected devices (such as the Personal Media Drive, USB drives, printer, and fax), remove media from drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Just after the first screen appears (the logo screen), press the F10 key repeatedly until a recovery menu appears.
  5. Select one of the following procedures, depending on which recovery type you want to perform:
    • To perform a standard system recovery, click Next , and then click Yes .
    • To perform a destructive recovery, click Advanced , (select Destructive Recovery ) and then click Next . CAUTION: A destructive recovery will format the hard drive. This will delete all the information on the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP and the original software that came with the computer .
  6. Read and respond to each window and screen that appears.
  7. After the System Recovery is complete, the computer restarts and continues into Windows setup. Complete the setup screens and wait until the computer finishes the setup. NOTE: It may take a long time to complete Windows setup. This time varies and may take over several hours, depending on the amount of files that were stored in the user account folders (for example, My Documents and the Desktop).
  8. Before using your computer, update and protect your computer. For more information, refer to Things To Do After Performing a System Recovery in Windows XP .
  9. Reinstall applications that you added after purchasing the PC, and any files you need from backup.

I'm having problems with WindowsXP loading at start-up


I don't think you have a virus, Norton 360 is a very good antivirus program and would have caught it. Try disabling all of the Norton 360 features then load the Windows XP disc. Sometimes anti-virus programs interfere with the processs. I am assuming you have the Windows XP original disc. This should work.
