Question about MSI 865PE Neo2-V Motherboard

1 Answer

Power supply or motherboard?

I accidently switched the power on and off and crashed the computer. Now as soon as power is applied, front light comes on, fans come on and I think hard disc spins. (the front ps on button has no effect) . the screen is blank.First thought power supply - but voltages at 20 way connector appear to be ok except for pin 14 (PS_ON).
-12V appears to be slightly down - say 11.8v.
I have tried removing the graphics card in case it was holding down the PS_ON signal and also tried changing the CPU.
As the voltages seem to be present could the fault still be the Power Supply? Can I prove it before buying a new unit?

Do you hear a beep when starting the computer? If you hear a single beep, it would indicated that the system is passing POST, if not, I would say your motherboard is dead.

How can i start my desktop without front panel power button switch?

The power switch on desktop computers is a momentary-contact type switch. Pressing it makes contact and releasing it removes contact. Because of that, it would be impossible to wire up a situation where the unit will power up with power supply. Luckily, it is fairly easy to "replace" a bad power switch. If you open your desktop computer and observe the rear of the power switch, you will see two wires coming out of it They go to a plug that connects to two pins on the motherboard. You can purchase a momentary action single-pole switch at any Radio Shack. There is very little voltage or current to deal with so any light duty switch will do. With power remove from the PC, clip the wires you traced from the power switch (do not confuse them with the Power LED light) at attach them to the wires from switch you purchased. Apply power and test operation. After testing, you can make a small hole in one of the removable panels for expansion drives and mount the new power switch! It will work just like the original.

Gateway DX4822-01 power switch problems

The front of your computer is the Front Panel.

The area of contact pins on the motherboard, that the Main wires from the Front Panel go to, is the Front Panel header.

Main wires such as Power On LED, Power On switch, HarDDrive activity LED, and Reset switch; IF used.

Suggest KEEP track of where those wires go!

Make a drawing, and notes. I even use a magic marker, (Sharpee?), and make a notation of the Front Panel header pinout, on the floor of the computer case.

In this particular case it isn't known if the Power On switch is the problem, or the Power Supply.

Power On switch;
Power UNPLUGGED to computer, Anti-Static Precautions FOLLOWED; (Don't know? Post back in a Comment),

Remove the twisted pair of W/B and W/G wires, to the Power On switch pins, in the Front Panel header.

Plug power back into computer.
Use a small flat tipped screwdriver, and touch the two Power On switch pins. (Jewelers screwdriver works well for this application)

Power Supply comes on? Bad Power On switch.
Allow Windows to fully load, run for a few minutes; then turn the computer off normally.

Jump the two Power On switch pins again.
Power Supply comes on? You DEFINITELY have a bad Power On switch.

Power Supply does NOT come on?
We will go to a further diagnostic test then.
Awaiting results for first test, then we will go on.

Post back in a Comment.

This is really poor practice and an excellent way to destroy a motherboard.
You should always have the board connectors plugged in before turning on the power supply, otherwise you may be blowing ICs left and right. It's perfectly OK to plug the supply into the wall or turn on its power switch with the board connectors in place. Also, nearly all modern boards have a set of pins that go to the front panel 'power' switch which does not switch AC but sends a logic signal to the power supply to turn the rest of the voltages on. Those pins have a 5V potential on them that is typically grounded to tell the supply to turn on.
If you're lucky, you still have an undamaged motherboard.

Normally the front panel on/off power button and the front panel reset button plug into connector pins on your motherboard.

If you can find a User Manual for your motherboard it will show you exactly where the switch leads plug in on the motherboard. The motherboard's manufacturer and model number will be printed on the board somewhere.

Good luck.

The ON/OFF button just "closes" an open circuit, e.g., just like a light-switch on the wall.

You could briefly even "short" the two pins on the motherboard front-panel, with a metal screwdriver, to prove that "closing" the circuit is the trigger to the motherboard to react, either by starting-up, or by shutting-down.

HP Pavillion 400 Power switch problem???

Could be your power supply is broken. That is a very common problem. Sometimes the computer will keep on restarting when the power supply is about to give way. I doubt it's the motherboard that is causing the problem, but then again i have never had a motherboard fail on me.

SUDDEN POWER FAILURE

The light on the motherboard will be on as soon as you plug the power supply in.
If, when you turn on the computer, the fan in the power supply does not start, your power supply is bad. In my experience, the switch in an ATX machine does not go bad--it's just a device to close a contact. If you really want to check it, though, find the place on the motherboard (lower right side as you are looking at the board with the top of the case away from you) where the wires from the front panel are plugged in--the ones that say pwr switch or something like that. When I do this, I remove the wires from the motherboard and short the two prongs where the wires were fastened.
In all probability, though, you need a new power supply.

My friend computer power lights does not come on

Make sure to check all connections to the computer from the wall/power supply, and make sure if he has a surge protector, that he did not accidently turn it off. If everything is connected ok, check to make sure the switch on the back of the power supply has not been turned off (if the power supply has one).. Also make sure that none of the buttons on the front of the PC are stuck in.

If all is good, the power supply might have failed, in that case, try changing the power supply with a new one.
