Question about Apple iMac G4 Desktop

My iMac G4 used in an office will load some websites using Safari or Firefox but not others, Las t week I slimmed down its data and now it will not enable me to access the firms intranet which it had always done before

    I tried to repair permissions a couple of times. I was a good idea because when I used to use Mac OSX 2 and 3 that used to be the standard response to almost any problem, these days when I spend much of my time in 10.5 its something you hear less of. However it didn’t immediately work. Trying other things I booted up in safe mode (shift key down at start-up) and I was able in that mode to access all the websites I needed. However when it came to printing what I had done- no response. I use an HP Officejet all in one, I think 3154, but as I am writing at home , I may have got the number wrong, but there was no response. Safe mode only loads Apple software. So I still have a problem. I can either work in safe mode using the online sites I needs but cannot print , or work in ordinary mode and print but cannot get the sites I need to load. Do you have a solution?

    Thanks for the help, but 1. I did try repairing permissions and I do have a backup , but I am not sure where that would help because I don’t think itis corrupt data, The fact that the my web browsers seem to work in Safe mode makes me think that some software conflict is causing the problem in ordinary mode. If I was in any OS up to OSX I would have run Conflict Catcher and have a good chance of solving the problem. Unfortunately that programme went out with OS9 and nothing like it has replaced it. Currently I am tring to use Disk Utilities 4 on the problem. I cant use Leopard because it is a G4 iMac with 10.3.9 OS and my two versions of 10.3 seem to have gone walkies

What have you tried so far to fix this problem?

I'd start with using Disk Utility, try using the repair permissions function, and also the other scan, I forget what it's called ( I'm mostly a pc / linux user)

That should fix the problem, but if it doesn't let me know and I'll give you some other suggestions.

Let me know what happens.

    Hmmm...well like I said, I'm not a mac guru, at least not when I'm trying to help over the internet. If it was my work computer then I'd probably back up my files and have someone in the IT department figure it. OR you could always just reinstall Leopard. Usually it's easier and smarter to just blast it away and start fresh, otherwise you could end up spending much much more time trying to figure out exactly what's causing the problem instead of the 1-2 hours it takes to just start over.

Just a thought have you tried a different browser if you are using safari such as firefox, chrome or opera, just to isolate whether the problem is with your browser than yahoo or facebook.

Have you tried under the safari menu resetting safari and then emptying the cache or you could download firefox or one of the other browsers available to see if they work. Hope this helps.

How to view full screen browser


In short, it's not built in to Safari. You can either install a plug-in for Safari or try a different web browser such as Firefox or Camino.

Some plugins that may help:
  1. Saft (http://haoli.dnsalias.com/Saft/index.html) adds a new preference pane in Safari called Saft, and two extra menu items under Safari menu, just above the "Preferences...", called "Full Screen" and "Max Screen".
  2. Megazoomer (http://ianhenderson.org/megazoomer.html) will install for any program (not just Safari for web browsing) and allows you to put any window full screen.
Other browsers to use instead of safari include:
  1. Firefox (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/internet_utilities/mozillafirefox.html)
  2. Camino (http://caminobrowser.org/)
I believe both of those browsers allow for full screen functions.

I went to sign on chatroulette on my imac and it is showing a black screen...but when i am in photobooth it works fine.. how do i fix this?


1. Make sure than no other Apps are using your iSight camera. Quit (not just close) all other apps that a running. There should be no 'lights' under any of the dock icons apart from your web browser and finder.
2. Reset safari settings. MenuBar: Safari---> Reset Safari

2. (If still not working) Update to the latest version of flash player (adobe.com). relaunch browser
3. (If still not working) Right click blank screen and choose 'flash settings', make sure you 'enable' webcam use.
4. (if still not working) try another browser (Chrome/Firefox)

Safari doesn't work on this used Imac G4 I just bought, but Camino does work? How do I get Safari working on this old thing?


On the left Top of your monitor is a apple Logo.Tip on it and select "About that Mac" A Window pops up and you select "More Info" it shows you the OSX on it. OSX 10.3 or OSX 10.4 Google "Safari Browser for OSX 10.? " Download it and it will work. You may have the latest Version.

Every time I turn on safari starts auto, get error that toolbar does not support my version of safari.


update your safari to latest version,
but I use Firefox on my mac,why not try it?

No. You should NOT delete safari. Go to the apple website and download safari and install it OVER your current version of it. This way, all your bookmarks, history, passwords, etc. will be maintained in the new install. If you delete it before installing the new version, this information will be lost. Good luck with it!

I downloaded aoldesktop for mac and installed it. When I tried to make it my home page on safari and open safari I get server cannot be found. Help hollis


You don't use the AOLdesktop app.
To use AOL as your home page in Safari, use the following URL address
http://www.aol.com/
Once there, log on to your account and then in the Safari Preferences General Tab, click on "set to current page" in the home page option.
