6 Answers

I have a Kenmore elcetric dryer #64622 I bought in 03, it has been working fine until I had it running, took one article out then it wouldn't start back up. The light inside still works, but the dryer will not start.

I haven't had any problems before, could it be something other than the door latch?

  • vickicgma Mar 10, 2009

Okay you said the problem could be the door latch, could it be something else, I haven't had any problems with this dryer before.

  • vickicgma Mar 10, 2009

I just want to know what else it could be the problem, in case it isn't the door. I am a disabled female and need to try to resolve this on my own by looking at all the possible problems, I did not mean to offend you.

  • vickicgma Mar 10, 2009

If it is a fuse, will the light still work? The light comes on when the door is opened but when I push the button or close the door it goes off.

Thermal fuse On many dryers, there's a thermal fuse (a heat-sensitive fuse that blows if the dryer overheats) mounted to the exhaust duct inside the back cover panel. The fuse is about an inch long. It's usually embedded in black resin and mounted in a white plastic housing.

If the fuse has blown, it has no continuity. When this happens, your dryer either just stops heating, or it doesn't work at all. Be sure to inspect the venting/heating system before replacing the fuse to put the dryer back into operation. (You can't re-set this type of fuse.)

You can pick up the fuse really cheap at a Sears parts store. It takes less than an hour to fix. But if you cannot do it yourself, see if you can get someone to do it for you...not worth the cost of the Sears guys coming out and doing it.

You mentioned light works inside the dryer
So next thing you need to check is the thermal fuse. If the thermal fuseis open the dryer will not start. If the thermal fuse is open, be sureto check the venting for restrictions. The thermal fuse is a safetydevice that prevents the dryer from starting if it senses anoverheating condition.
Other possibilities; door switch, timer, motoror wiring harness problems.I have a Kenmore elcetric - image41910img-or.jpg

You may want to check your door switch.push it in and let off of it and see if it clicks.if the finger that goes to switch is not their then you will need new door switch.also if the door switch is good take back off dryer after you unplug it and you will see a fuse on the blower housing it is white with black stripe down center.two wires to it.you can test it by putting the two wires together and wrap with electrical tape plug dryer in and see if it starts.

light will work but the dryer wont.you will need to pull dryer out to get to fuse.

  • mike cooksey Mar 10, 2009

some dryers also have a cut off switch if the belt breaks.so check belt also.

If the dryer stopped working after you opened the door in the middle of a cycle, then the problem is usually a defective door latch that must be replaced.

Sure it can be something different , also faulty element, faulty fan, thermal fuse and bad control board can cause the same, but you told me that the problem started after you opened the door in middle of a cycle, that can jam the door lock.

Well you refused my solution, now I am not sure you will be able to read further comments of mine.

Also cut power for ten minutes, if the problem is a jammed control board this can reset the fault.

If it is the door latch, that costs less than $10, it should be tested with a multimeter, part here.

The thermal fuse is not the main fuse, when the thermal fuse blows on a dryer it breaks power to the heating circuit.

See more here: http://www.davesrepair.com/DIYhelp/DIYth...">Your Dryer's Thermal Fuse

http://www.partselect.com/repair.aspx%3F...">Free Dryer Repair Guide - Replace your dryer's thermal fuse

Also heating element , fan and control board can cause same conditions. However many kenmore will keep working normally, but not heating if the problem is the fan or heating element.

Here a general troubleshooting page that explains possible causes for your same conditions:

    It doesn't work at all

    I quote:

If your dryer doesn't work at all, it could be because of problems with:

    Power from the house
    Door switch
    Thermal fuse
    Wiring

    Power from the house

    Check
to see whether there's power getting to the dryer. Is it plugged in? If
you plug something else into the outlet, does it work? If not, check
for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker.

    Door switch

    If
the door switch or the door-switch actuator is defective, the dryer
won't work and you need to replace the failed component. The switch is
inside the dryer main housing near the door frame. Sometimes you need
to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch.

    Thermal fuse

On many dryers, there's a thermal fuse (a heat-sensitive fuse
that blows if the dryer overheats) mounted to the exhaust duct inside the back cover panel. The fuse is about an
inch long. It's usually embedded in black resin and mounted in a white plastic housing.

If the fuse has blown, it has no continuity. When this happens, your
dryer either just stops heating, or it doesn't work at all. Be sure to
inspect the venting/heating system before replacing the fuse to put the
dryer back into operation. (You can't re-set this type of fuse.)

Dryer stops but the timer continues on

Fixed! The "push to start" button was stuck. Must have been some dust. I pushed the knob a few times and that's all it took. Works fine now.
