Question about Technics SL-1210 Turntable

Technics SL-L3 turntable no sound until warm up

I have a Technics SL-L3, that was hit by lighting or an energy surge about 15 years ago. It worked fine up to that point. After the incident, the turntable will play records, but there is no sound through the amp. If I just let the record play, about half way through it, the sound on the left speaker comes through. It goes in and out (like when some one is messing with the speaker cable). Then about 2 mins later, the right speaker comes in. Both speakers are working and the record is playing. But if I turn up the sound I get a really loud static sound in the background. I already switched the inputs its hooked to on the amp, and the problem still occurs. I know for sure it is not the amp, because I have video systems hooked up to it and it sounds fine.

Any ideas?

So, would I have to test the pre-amp by getting another turntable to plug into it or is there another way?

Thanks for your help, I know that the pre-amp on the stereo is not bad. I have another stereo with a phono input, and when I plugged the turntable in it did the same thing that it did on the other amp. I guess I will try to change the cartridge and see if that solves the problem

Either the cartridge is bad in the phonograph tone arm.  Or the pre-amp in the stereo is bad...remember that the turntable is the only accessory that uses the pre-amp input on the stereo.  I'm betting the pre-amp is bad.

Technics website may have one. The counter weight has a setscrew on it. Loosen it ans move the weight slightly forward until the needle just rests completely in the groove and stays there. Too much will cause excessive wear to the needle and the record.

The low grinding noise could be the motor spinning with "no load" i.e the belt has snapped or fallen off due to being perished.
Lift the platter to refit the belt and or replace it if required.

Technics SD-L3 TURNTABLE

Does your receiver have a dedicated phono input? If not you'll need to use a preamp between the turntable and receiver. Your other turntable may have a preamp built in and the Technics not.

If this does not help, please post the brand and model of both your receiver and your other turntable.

Turntable turns, but there's no sound.

Well, the motor itself is completely separate from the sound. The path of the sound is basically

Styli -> Cartridge -> Tonearm -> RCA Cables -> Input Source

I would say start from the beginning. Check your stylus. If it's ok, then that means your Cartridge is probably ok. Make sure you have a secure connection from the tonearm to the cartridge assembly.

There really isn't much else to it.

If you cannot get it to work, I would suggest taking it to a service center for assistance.

All my vinyl sounds warped on turntable

Most common problem is the belt getting soft, especially if it has sat for a long time. It will get a weak spot where it sat on the drive pulley and every time the turntable goes around and hits that weak spot it will slow down a little making it sound like a warped album.

The belts are usually very easy to replace. Usually just lift off the turntable or there might be a small clip on the center pin, then it lifts off. Replacement belts can be ordered from several places, as shown in this search... http://www.google.com/search?&q=SL-B200+Technics+turntable+belt
