This plastic strip is probably the so called "encoder strip", it has many fine black lines that the carriage sensor counts to find out where the carriage is located on the paper.

This encoder strip is attached directly to the printer's frame on the right, and to a leaf spring on the left side. It also runs through a slot on the back side of the carriage.

It can be treaded back and reattached if you're nimble-fingered, but in many cases it's broken and needs to be replaced. As far as I remember HP doesn't sell these parts separately (correct me if I'm wrong!) so if it's broken the printer most probably has to be turned in for service.

But if the encoder strip is intact, there's no right or left side - or up/down - of it, so it can be attached any way you want - as long as you get it back properly. Usually it's best to first hook it up on the leaf spring, then attach it on to the small hook on the right side. Being able to slide the carriage back and forth eases the operation. You can get it back without disassembling the printer; it's fiddly but it's possible.

Good luck! :)

A plastic strip that runs behind the ink cartridges has fallen off. its a quarter inch wide and about 12 inches long. each end has a slot cut at a 45 degree angle and an eigth of an inch from the end. I...

That is the ink guide. If the plastic strip connector (the slot cut on both sides) is not damaged/broken, the other metal tab may have fallen making the plastic strip to fall. It is usually soldered on the metal frame of your printer, find the missing tab and solder it back in. You should find a trace of the tab's original location.

My daughter pulled this long plastic strip out HP PSC 1210

Sounds like it is the guide strip that pushes/pulls the print carriage back and forth?

Sorry but it is not a repair easily carried out at home, if at all. If in one piece and not broken it might be re-introduced but the bottom line is you will most likely have to purchase new? Sorry. it might cost just as much if taken to a repairs?

Hi Debbie,

If the plastic strip is about 10mm (or ~0.4 inches) and about the with of the printer, and if you look very closely the strip is striped (with tiny very think vertical lines).. .that strip is the locator strip… The ink cartridges read that strip to know where the carriage is (ie the carriage reads/counts the strips and then it knows where it is)

Hence if the stripe is now in your possession the printer doesn’t know where the cartridges are and just keeps moving them back and fro hoping to “find them”.. sadly without that stripe you printer will work no more L

Sorry.

Ink light keeps flashing -

Have you made sure that you've taken the plastic strip off of the ink cartridge? I had this problem once and I then realised that i had forgotten to remove the strip covering the ink.
Also, have you installed a colour cartridge? I have the same printer and it wont print unless you have both ink cartridges inserted and in good condition. (If you don't want to fork out for HP Original, I find that the Tesco Remanufactured versions work fine)
Hope this helps.

HP F370 PSC

One possibility is. look toward the back of the printer, there is a strip of clear plastic, about a quarter inch wide and clear. It runs the length of the print head area. That contains the stop strip. That strip or the sensor on the print head itself may be dirty and not sensing the strip, therefor not knowing when to stop.

Mechanism Error - Print Cradle won't move! - HP 5650

This "plastic strip" is called the "carriage encoder strip". This strip dictates the timing of the carriage assembly. If the end slots aren't broken, you can re-attach it. Otherwise, you'll need to replace it. They are about $10.
