Canon MX850 printer - ADF copy has black line on it

Canon MX850 printer - ADF copy issue

When I make a copy using the auto document feeder, the copy has a black line running down the left side of the page about an inch in.

The printer is only six weks old and the problem has just started.

Copying from the glass is fine.

Exactly the same problem as tobyrjackson - when copying using adf there is a thin black vertical line running the whole length of paper. Prints from glass platen & computer just fine.

Pull up the cover to the ADF. And clean the rooler and the pad. Also, lift up the scanner top and clean the narrow glass to the left of the scanner glass. If that does not clear it, there is a optical lens unit in the ADF that may have some toner or dust on it.

Hello, my name is Steve,.
This is a common problem and an easy fix.
If you lift the ADF / top cover assembly up, you will see a small narrow piece of glass next to the flat-bed glass.

Ths is called a "Slit-glass". The only purpose is to read content from that point by the scanner, The Scanner will sit in the underside of it.

It is dirty. Wipe this with glass cleaner and a soft lint-free cloth. you may need to do this several times. Concentrate the part of the glass were this image problem is just by the orientation of the document you are installing with the direction of the document you are passing through the ADF.

It will take several attempts, but with each try, make a new test from the original document, unyil the problem disappears.

I believe this will solve your problem, Best , Steve

SOURCE: keeps asking to load original in document feeder

This has a happy ending. But first, the obligatory narrative:
The HP site has advice on how to deal with a document feeder that doesn't detect your document. It doesn't talk about the opposite problem, which is what molecular is describing. I had the identical problem yesterday. I'd place the original on the glass and it kept demanding that I put the original in the feeder. So I got into a chat session with the HP technician. Her advice, (based on the possibility that a power surge had created the problem) unplug from everything, restart, and retry. The problem persisted. I told her so. She broke the connection. Nice.
So here is how I fixed it. Using the Setup button>Tools>3. Restore factory defaults, I returned the device to its factory settings. I put the original on the glass and it made the copy without a problem.
Here is a pure speculation. There are at least two ways to enter settings related to two-sided copying. I had used one to enter the settings (two-sided original to two-sided copy, as it happens) and later tried to use another button to change those settings. I noticed the 2-sided settings did not change. I believe the feeder is the default for two-sided copying. So when the system failed to clear the settings, it failed to clear the default. Once I returned all settings to the factory originals, the problem disappeared.

SOURCE: Vertical lines when scanning using automatic document feeder...Glass is clean

It is not in the glass. More than likely it is in the rollers of the ADF feeder. If you open the cover of the ADF feeder you can see there are 3 screws (! is found under another small cover furthest to the back of the machine. Once these three screws are removed you can left the entire ADF feeder from the unit. You will then be able to clean all the rollers. Do not use alcohol as this will dry our your rollers and cause them to eventually crack. Just use soap and water to clean the rollers. Then reinstall the ADF feeder assembly back on the machine.

SOURCE: vertical line appears in scans using the ADF, but not with copies

The scanner element consists of many small LED's, I suspect one of them is not lighting up.

SOURCE: Canon MX330 - trying to use ADF. No doc inside on

Canon Pixma MX330, ADF error, Code : 2,103,0
Here's what I found. There were no stuck gears or pieces of plastic caught anywhere.
The ****** can still feed paper, except for (consistently) the last page -->error/stuck.
1) In order to CLEAR THE ERROR you need to do two things
a) & b):
a) Press OK, WITH THE HOOD OPEN, with a piece of paper loaded in the ADF, being careful to grab the paper manually as it comes out of the bottom of the hood.
b) Windex the strip of glass surface which sits under the ADF next to the platen. This needs to be done with attention to minute detail, and a bright LED flashlight; since ink smudges off of documents and collects on the glass with alarming frequency. The machine may think these smudges are caught/jammed paper.
2) In order to SCAN a stack of paper, add one blank sheet to the bottom of your document. This page will be the one that
fails to clear the ADF, generates an error, and must be manually cleared before the next job.
The rest of your pages will have already scanned.

Repeat Every Time You Use it

There is a black line on the printed copy when doing a copy from the top feeder. There is no line when doing a copy from the glass.

The main cause for this issue is that there may be debris or marks on the scanner glass that is used for Auto document feeder (ADF) page scans.

Hello,
It can be the problem in sensor flapper on ADF tray ( small nose that is pointing out ). Maybe it doesn't works fine or in the middle of the copy from adf the paper is too far away from the sensor.
Also can be the problem of ADF pickup clutch or You are using unappropriate paper type- try with normal A4 80g/m as original to copy from adf.

Be sure the glass is clean.
If the Canon is anything like HP and you are using the ADF there is a thin strip of glass on the left end of the flatbed. This is where scans are read when using the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder)
All it takes is a tiny speck on the glass to cause lines on the copy. Clean it by spraying a glass cleaner on a soft towel and wiping

Black line on copies and scans - not when i print

Are you using the automatic document feeder (ADF) when copying/ scanning? If so, clean the area on the left side of the platen glass -- that is where the original document is read. There is probably some dirt or other foreign material that is blocking the scanner and causing lines.

My canon MP830 produces a thin vertical black line on documents fed through the document feeder to be copied or faxed. This only happens using the document feeder.

The expert told me to run a porous piece of paper through the adf 10 to 15 times. I used a piece of Avery textured paper for notecards that I had. The problem was solved after about 5 runs through.

Black vertical lines on faxes sent using auto document feeder

If you lift up the lid on your scanning device you will notice a glass strip about 1 inch thick and then the large area of glass used for flatbed scanning. The 1 inch strip is used for ADF scanning. Because your papper is moving across the glass strip, any dot, smudge or scratch will affect your scanning and cause verticial lines down the page. Sometimes the dot is not visible to the eye. Get some glass cleaner that has alcohol in it and thoroughly clean the glass strip and it should solve your problem. If it turns out to be a scratch on the glass then cleaning won't help.
