I am spiritseeker48 the poster of this query...it is not"689." It is my intention NOT accept this solution answer. I am experienced with cameras. This lcd screen is unique in the way that it flips out and rotates. It was a great innovation, unfortunately, the more moving parts the more problems; this is it's inherent weakness. The minute it went blank, I knew I would have to replace it, so the answer was not an acceptable answer. I was hoping for a "pie in the sky" answer of something simple that would fix. Anyone can return it to the shop to get it fixed.

    Much mahalo for your time.

The camera sensor for the lcd is most likely not functioning.

I would suggest repairs, got warranty? free repair estimate is available from www.advancecamera.com/repair

possible home fix might be to replace it yourself but I would highly recommend professional repairs as cameras are so delicate and may break down even more.

I understand, the issue may also be a cut wire between the lcd screen and the sensor. If you are willing to open it up I would check on the wires that go in to the lcd screen and make sure they are intact and properly connected to the mainboard.

Canon PowerShot S2 IS - cannot see anything on LCD screen or through viewfinder. Any advice?

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

Camera turns on, lens goes out, but it is black, see nothing through it or on lcd screen (yes, cover is off). There is no error messages, still takes pictures but just black. Can view previous pictures on...

It coud be a very common IRIS/Shutter stuck problem...this has been reported on lot of S3 IS & S2 IS cameras... just search for this on web and you'll find a temporary solution also (related to taking battery out in the middle of taking picture during a long exposure (15" in Tv mode), but for more permanent fix you need take it back to Canon service center

I have no image in the viewfinder on a canon S2 IS but the lcd display works and it seems to work fine otherwise. What are the likely causes?

There is sometimes a button on digital cameras that turns off the LCD while taking pictures to save battery. Does your camera have a viewfinder? If it does then there might be a button that looks like a little screen or says "disp" or something like that.

Black screen for Shooting Canon S3 IS

I have a similar problem with my Canon S3 IS. Dark/black LCD in Shooting mode. However, I can view my existing photos in Display mode. I was about to spend money to get a Panasonic TZ5. Somehow I bumped into a solution post for S2 IS. Here is the link:

I tried their solutions twice and it WORKS. My S3 is working fine now.

Black LCD and Viewfinder

I have the similar problem as above...Canon 5D

When camera is turned on the viewfinder is black. All other functions appear to be working correctly. I can view pictures on the card. I take a picture and it views on the screen and the spec's come up on the botton of the view finder but the viewfinder is 90 black with a bit of blur. Is this the censor or a mirror...?

Is this fixable and at what approximate cost? Would it be cheaper to replace?

Canon S2 powershot. Camera turns on but no pictures show up and cannot see through the viewfinder...it is black. Menus all work. What can we try?

First thing to try is that you didn't accidentally turn off the LCD screen. Turn on the camera, and press the bottom DISP on the back of your camera.

If that didn't work, the next thing to try is to take a picture while the viewfinder is black. Download the picture to your computer, and view it on the computer's monitor. Does this picture also show up as black. If so, then the camera's CCD imager has likely failed, requiring professional camera service to be repaired. If your camera was an S1 IS, Canon would fix this for free:

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=225&modelid=13390&keycode=2112&id=29819

Unfortunately the S2 IS is not on the advisory list. If you wish to inquire of professional repair from Canon, please call 1-800-OK-CANON.

Canon PowerShot S2 IS

From a similar solved problem: I have read of this problem (doing research before buying a Canon S2). Apparently it is a bad sensor and Canon will fix it for free if it's still under warranty (otherwise it will cost $119.00). and I have the same problem. Just got off the phone with Canon and have to send the camera to them. Repair takes ~2wks. Call them @1-800-828-4040 and follow the menus. Canon's site also addresses this for the S1 and others (but not the S2). Says heat and high humity can cause a connection to the sensor to come undone. Hope this helps.
