2tb verbatim external hard drive will not power up all of a sudden

Model samsung hd204ui, It will not power up. I don't think it's fried as I opened it up and nothing seems burnt. I think perhaps the power unit in the casing is faulty?? Is there any way I can connect it to a western digital 3tb (WD my book essential) SATA, casing? Or to a desktop so I can try salvage some files?

A 2Tb drive is most likely to be a SATA drive, so you can use a SATA cable and power connector in your computer tower. The case is just there to allow the power and data interfaces to be contained. Or just plug it into a hard drive dock.

SOURCE: Notebook does not recognize My Book / Western Digital hard drive

I have solved a similar problem to this. My laptop would not allow me to get to my WD Passport. The driver was fine and no errors were reported - it recognised the drive when I ran the hardware removal utility - I just couldn't see it from any of my windows applications and therefore couldn't get to any data.

The problem was that the passport was being designated as E:\ but my laptop already has a network drive mapped to E:\. When I am in the office the computer connects the network drive to E:/ and so my passport automatically picks the next available letter - F:\. Away from the office, the network drive is still buit shows as "disconnected network drive" and somehow the laptop gets confused into designating both the the passport and the disconnected network drive to the same letter. so the passport is not visible in My Computer.

To fix it I went to My Computer, right clicked on the disconnected network drive and select Disconnect from the options there. And hey presto the passport appeared!

You can see which letter your USB HDD is assigned in the device manager in XP. Right click on the device and go to the Volumes tab - click on Populate and the drive letter should be shown there. If that doesn't match what you see under that letter in My Computer it looks like you have a similar problem & so disconnecting whatever is there in My computer might help.

SOURCE: No power to my WD 1TB

If its under warranty then get it sent back.

If its not then almost any 3.5 " external sata enclosure will do so long as it has its own power supply. and if that supply is a wall-wart then should you pooch that, they are so easy to pick up and replace.

If you need quick access to the files remove the disk and fit it to a suitable computer.

SOURCE: How to disable Autorun function

Have you tried renaming autorun.inf or the autorun folder to something else? This file or folder would be in the root directory of the drive.

That would be my guess.

Please be kind when you rate -- I admit this is a guess.

In your formatting on a windows machine you can format by right clicking the new drive and select format. Or you can format by opening manager by right clicking on my computer and choose manage then go to disk management and locat the new drive and right click format

Not working, I have to push hard with my open hand on top of the Verbatim and hold it there to work

you have probably dropped it to the floor and has received a good impact.

try to repair the case, or better still, get a new one, more than probably won't last long

HOW MANY AMP NEED A POWER SUPLY FOR A VERBATIM SNS2TB ?

Hi Jorge
Internally a standard 3.5" Hard Drive uses two voltages
about .7A on the 5v Line
and .55A on the 12v line.
So an External AC Plug Pack supplying 12v @ 1.5 to 2Amp should be adequate.
Be careful to match the polarity as marked on the back of your drive and use the correct thickness of the centre pin. There are 2-3 different sizes of this connector available at electronics component suppliers in case you make your own supply up.
Good Luck

Windows 7 doesnt recognize external hard drive

In my opinion either the dive is bad or the power supply is bad. A bad power supply can be fixed by getting a new case, $20 on Amazon, Ebay, etc. Data on a bad drive may be recovered by using specialized software. I used DiskInternals(.com) "UnEraser" successfully to recover data from a disk that would not mount.

Hi....my Samsung external HD G3 2tb won't turn on again after I erased all data on it. It is connected thru a hub to my iMac and taking off the power or USB and plugging back in won't do the t

It sounds like the drive has failed. The fact that you erased the drive just before it failed is coincidental.

Take the drive back and request a replacement under warranty. Also, demand that they destroy the drive in order to protect your data.

This is late response.....maybe it can help someone else....I had the same problem with Verbatim SuperSpeed 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive - plugged into Fujitsu Lifebook notebook running Vista SP1 and got the blue screen. Solution: upgraded to Vista SP2 which solved the problem (also Fujitsu had me update the chipset on my laptop, but I don't think this made a difference). Hope this saves someone else time!

When I plug in my verbatim 3.0 desktop hard drive my computer finds problem and shuts down

I had the same issue. The solution for me was to swap the old USB cable I was using with a previous smaller USB drive for the cable that came with the drive. The USB 3.0 connector into the external drive is slightly different than the old USB 2.0 connectors. For whatever reason my mobo hated that setup and reset itself with the only error reported in the computer management event viewer being a somewhat ambiguous one that related to a possible loss of power.
