Question about Thorens Turntables

1 Answer

Turntable belt drive keeps slipping off.

I have a Thorens TD 280 turntable that I bought new 20 odd years ago. Every time I press the start button the belt slips off the drive wheels and I have to take the record, rubber and plate off to manually replace the rubber belt. The only way to prevent this is by slowly and carefully spinning the record with my finger until it reaches something like the sorrect speed and only then pressing the button to start the motor. What's going on here? Is the belt worn/stretched and needing replacement? Where do I get a replacement belt? Thanks in advance for any help, Gary.

I have a Linn LP12. At least in the case of my turntable, that's just how you are supposed to use it (i.e. this is what the manual says). You could get a replacement belt f you like, but I would guess it will not make a difference - that is, I think you do not need a replacement belt.

However, in my case I don't have to be very careful about the start-up push on the turntable, just one tweak to get it rotating at about the right speed is enough in my case.

Thorens TD190 speed problem

Depends if it is a belt drive or direct drive turntable. Most problems like this on a belt are caused by the belt itself, which will be found by lifting the platter matt up. If you need to replace the belt make a note of how it fits before removing it. You can find the belt by searching first for the make/model number and the word "belt". If that doesn't find it, measure in MM the diameter of the belt. You might also need to measure the thickness. Put that into Google with the words "turntable belt". You don't have to spot on with the measurements. Just get the nearest to yours.
If it's a Direct Drive, then that will be an electrical fault, so it might need the attention of a trained engineer.

Check for dirt. Try some grease or oil. Silcone grease is best.

Hi, they are not an auto start model turntable. To start lift tone arm off rest and move into position at start of record. It will automatically lift and return to rest as well as shut off at end of record. cheers john ,, Styluscity.com

You will have to disengage the mechanical switch off lift. Pretty nice for an automatic turntable.
