Drive wheel locking up

Jazzy 1121 power wheelchair---My right drive wheel will lock up while I'm traveling. It won't go forward or back. When I remove and replace motor & gearbox it will go again I've checked the freewheel lever and it's fine. Could it be a problem in joy-stick? I've checked for broken or bent gears they're O.K.

Further to my above answer,
check all connector blocks and make sure they are clean and not corroded if they are clean with emery paper or replace as needed. it might also be the motor brushes that are not making contact properly, these are located on the sides of the motor under a small black cover about the size of a UK 1p these unscrew and the brushes pull out, there is a spring attached that pushes the brush against the motor, take them out (one on ether side of each motor 2 in total to each motor) and clean with alcohol or similar, be careful not to damage them, as they are out use a Hoover to suck out any dust particles out of the motor housings, just put the tube over the holes you removed the brushes from and suck. then back to the brushes, when they are clean and dry replace them back in to the slot you removed them from, do not force, they should slide back with ease you need to place the spring and the gold cap back in and hold it there as you place the cover back and tighten up the covers, you will need to turn the spring cap around until it slot in. see picture

On some Jazzys there is a tension adjust on the freewheel lever. It could be that. But if you have replaced the motor and gearbox and it still is doing it the motor and gearbox should still be under warranty.

I had a similar prob it was dirt on the controller plug ( the lead that comes out of the joy stick controller and plugs in tho the 8+1 pin socket at the back of the chair just below the seat level) i just used some emery paper and cleaned the pins on the plug and prob sorted.

Can i lock the controls on my jazzy 1121

This is taken from the owner's manual from the 1121 with a VSI controller:

I suggest you print this out and keep it handy.

Locking/Unlocking the VSI

The VSI has a feature that enables you to

lock your power chair to prevent unauthorized use.

To lock the VSI:

1. With the VSI switched on, press and hold the on/off key. After 1 second, the VSI should beep.

2. Release the on/off key.

3. Push the joystick to the full forward position until the VSI beeps.

4. Pull the joystick to the full rearward position until the VSI beeps.

5. Release the joystick. There should be a long beep.

6. The VSI is now locked.

To unlock the VSI:

1. Press the on/off key and power on the VSI. The maximum speed/profile indicator should ripple up and down.

2. Push the joystick to the full forward position until the VSI beeps.

3. Pull the joystick to the full rearward position until the VSI beeps.

4. Release the joystick. There should be a long beep.

5. The VSI is now unlocked.
NOTE: If the above procedure fails to either lock or unlock the VSI, contact your authorized Pride Provider.

I have a fairly old 1121 but cannot find any levers to go into freewheel. I have seen a modern one and can see them in that. Can you help?

Jackie I looked on the Pride Website and threy showed them behind each drive wheel above the motor facing the rear of the chair. Lift to place in freewheel and push down to engage. I hope this helps you

I have an older version od the 1121 but cannot find the lever for freewheel. I know where it is on a modern one

I believe the older versions had a release lever and cable system at the rear center. This was a 2 step, 2 handed on your knees process to release the lock on lever with your left hand and pull out and turn the lever with your right hand. This pulled on the cables to both motors to disengage the freewheel levers

How to push the jazzy wheel chair when power fails''

There are two levers located on the base of the chair on the left and right sides. Depending on the model, they will be located on top of the base on the front section of the chair base, or on the rear or on the lower sides. Most rotate 90 degrees to disengage the gears so you can manually push the chair. Others are moved up and down, or in and out. Return them to the locked position when done.

Pull the forward and to right to lock position, which will release the gear so that the wheelchair can be move about without any electric power. Bear in mind though that releases the gear, still too heavy to push as normal wheelchair. Give a go, to find out for yourself.

Motor Wiring

Two white wires are for the electric brake.  When the wheelchair is turned off while on an incline, the motors automatically lock up, preventing the wheelchair from rolling backwards.  The white wires disengage the electric brake when power is applied.
