If you're looking for a standalone monitor you can check stores like & I just picked up a 22" widescreen 1080p monitor from for $179.99. Hope this helps.

Laptop screen is blank white gateway

I was say you will need to replace the screen. To confirm everything else is working hook an external monitor to the vga. You may need to press the FN key + one of the F# keys that may have an icon of a monitor to toggle the display to the external display. If everything works this way then replace the screen. You can usually find a cheap replacement screen on ebay.

I would do the following
  • First test to make sure the computer is really booting up. Hook up an external monitor and toggle the display by pressing (in most cases with laptops [fn + F7], or look for a key that says LCD/ or a pic of a monitor)
  • If you get a picture on the screen then almost certainly your actual screen is bad
  • If it still doesn't work, with monitor hooked up reboot the machine
  • If it still has no display then your motherboard is most likely bad
  • If you can see a very very faint display on the computer then it is most likely the inverter board
In ranking order of difficulty to repair from easiest to hardest Inverter, motherboard, screen All repairs I would rank 7 or higher out of 10. All cost from most repair shops several hundred dollars
If you have a warranty great! If not you can try and find someone cheap like myself to repair it :) or just buy a new computer.

Monitor is broke, where can I get a new one cheap?

It really depends on what sort of Monitor you would like. A brand new monitor is most likely not going to be cheap however if you can get a used monitor that works just as well then I would recommend Make sure to ask questions and pictures of the condition. Craigslist you can barter to get lower prices, a good tip is to calculate the costs of driving mileage for you as well. Never give away your personal information online or over the phone. A phone number and email is sufficient.

My notebook screen is black, it doesn't show any graphics at all. i hook it up to an external monitor and it works fine

Your screen is shot. Access the internet and shop for a replacement for your model. You don't have to get a new computer. It's 60 bucks. It is quite easy to replace this screen. It's about six little screws unplug it and plug in the new one. Just be gentle when removing plastic covers. The screen has to be all the way open or almost closed to remove the small panel at the top of the base.

IF you hooked another monitor to your laptop did you transfer the screen to the other monitor if so and you got nothing i would say that you had a video card problem. it may be time to get a new laptop it will cost you about 1/2 the cost of a new one to fix it.

Two cracks in my sony laptop but still operative

Replacing a laptop monitor can cost up to $200-$500. If you don't mind only using it as a desktop, you can hook up a regular monitor to the laptops video port for a quick cheap fix.

How to connect to external monitor?

You need to determine the fault first.
Can you determine exactly where the boom came from (the adapter or laptop)?
When you turn on your laptop does the LED lights indicating that there is power to the laptop and you can hear the hard drive spinning as well as the fan?
Do you know the power adapter is OK (you can test it with a multimeter)?
If the laptop is dead then the external monitor is of no use.

The laptop normally has a blue video output connector, usually on the back edge of the laptop where you can connect an external monitor or a data projector. When a monitor or projector is powered up first and then the laptop the display goes to the external video first. You can switch between the laptop screen and external video by clicking the blue Fn + F4 function keys.

Latitude D600 LCD/VIDEO Problem

Sorry to be the one to tell you what you already know. You do have an LCD problem as you suspected. Hooking to an external monitor pretty much ruled out anything else. The good news is that there are a bazillion lattitudes out there, some do not work so, a cheap Lcd should be easy to come by. Technicaly it is not hard to swap LCD. Acquire replacement LCD and cerefully install it. OR troubleshoot existing LCD to component level and repair the defect. Or get a new laptop..
