Unexpected problem with Seagate factory refurbished...

By Riddle - usenet poster

I have had this experience now with 2 Seagate drives sent in for RMA
repair. As you probably know when they receive the defective drive
another refurbished unit is sent out (different serial number).

Both drives were 18GB SCA LVD's (ST118202LC). The replacements had
model ST118202LC on the label and looked identical but when queried by
the host adapter were SX118202LS. Also these refurbished units
operated at 40MB/s and not 80MB/s which the original units did. I can
tell since my host adapter card, Adaptec 4-channel 3400, reports this
info.

I was interested whether others have noticed this practice. I have not
called them on it yet as otherwise they have provided very good
service and I have had good luck with their products.

If these drives failed soon after being purchased, you may be able to
get the seller to replace them with new stock and to treat them as DOA's
back to Seagate. Good to know for future reference.

Where did you buy the original drives? Seagate does not look at the
model number when they exchange drives, but at the top-level assembly
part number, which will be different for drives provided to various
OEM's. If your drives originally had OEM firmware and your vendor changed
the firmware to the standard/generic firmware, you'll get back the orig-
inal firmware when you RMA the drive, since that information is part of
the assembly number.

I've had drives that my local Seagate rep had upgraded to ASA-II code
from the ASA-I code, and when I RMA'd them, the replacements came back
with ASA-I code because that's what the label said.

I've RMA'd drives that were no longer made, and received newer (better)
models in return.

Without knowing what the labels said on your original drives, I can't
say if you ran into this particular issue. You should certainly call them
and find out what they think happened. Note that with the serial numbers
from the "in" column on the yellow sheet you got back with your drives,
Seagate can determine who the original drives were sold to, and if they
were OEM drives or not.
