steve, it's a two cycle engine. is there a flywheel key that could be broken on a two cycle? and is any timing position that might cause my problem?

  • nanerbits Apr 29, 2009

I have the same problem. Someone looked at the mower last year and said it was the flywheel key, but i have no idea where it is located, and i can not get ahold of that person. Any help would be appreciated!

Does it have a two cycle or four cycle engine on this unit????
if it's two cycle the piston and rings might me burnt and scored....
if it's four cycle, you need to check to see if the flywheel key is broken.didyou happen to hit some thing the last time you mowed????.to check the flywheel key you need to take off the blower housing so you can take off the center bolt that hold the flywheel on.you'll be able to see if the key is broken or not...

yep all small motors have a flywheel key, that's what controls the timing of the motor.if it's broke the timing is off so it's firing at the wrong time.if you take the fly wheel nut off you can look at the keyway and see if it's lined up with crank shaft keyway.

Clean or change air filter. Clean, gap or change spark plug. Empty gas tank add fresh gas with Stabil. When spark plug is removed pull rope several times to blow out cylinder. Spray starter fluid in spark plug hole before replacing spark plug. Clean outside of carb so choke works freely. Spray starter fluid into carb breather hole with air filter removed and try to start. if running replace air filter and cover. If no start disassemble carb and clean. If no start replace carb.

Remove spark plug. Pull rope several times to blow out cylinder. Spray WD 40 in spark plug hole. Pull rope several times. ensure compression is present. Replace spark plug with new one. Spray starting fluid in cylinder before replacing spark plug. Ensure plug wires snaps on tight. Check oil level, fill with 30w oil if required. All mowers have a low oil start cutoff. Hold the butterfly valve (behind air filter) open with a screwdriver, while somebody else tries to start it. Toro has had problems with atuomatic chokes. If it fires right up, thats the problem! If so, just wire it open, or contact Toro for a repair kit. Try using starting fluid, not carb cleaner, and spray directly into the head through the spark plug port. If you didn't do it already, blow out all the ports in the carb with compressed air, or carb cleaner. Also, be sure the safety lever is engaging correctly (top bar on handle) at the engine. Lawn mowers are pretty simple, so the problem is most likely simple too.

Toro push mower with B & S engine won' start unless I put gas in spark plug hole.. I removed carburater bowl and bolt holding bowl is clear. What's wrong?

There is trash in your carburetor blocking the main jet. You are going to have to remove the carburetor and give the carburetor a thorough cleaning. Watch out for the spray carb cleaner, wear safety glasses or a face shield as when cleaning out the carb the passages can redirect back at your face.

I hope this gets you going again.

Have gts toro, engine starts then stops can not get it started.. r s

Your mower engine has to have these things WORKING to run: 1. Compression (engine in good shape) 2. Strong Spark (magneto air gap has to be correct for strong spark) 3. Clean air ( good, clean air filter w/no air leaks) 4. Clean, fresh fuel supply (gas less than 30 days olds with an inline filter installed in mower's fuel line). These things are assuming the mower hasn't struck an immovable object such as concrete, tree stump etc. recently. This will shear the flywheel key and timing may be off so far that engine won't start. So, where would you like to start my friend? Try checking these things. In the meanwhile....we can try to "coax" the engine into running. Remove the spark plug. Get an aerosol can of carb/choke cleaner spray. Spray a couple of shots into the engine. Reinstall plug. Choke the carb and attempt to start. This may or may not work, according to the conditions listed earlier. If this doesn't get it running, remove the plug and try it again.
We are trying to get it to run on its own, so it will start (or attempt to start) drawing fuel from the carburetor. Sometimes the brass bolt that holds the carburetor float bowl on gets clogged. You drain the gas, remove the bolt and clean all the small hole in the bottom and along the sides of it. This bolt is also the main jet of the carb. Cleaning this with carb cleaner can only help. If you do this, use NO metal objects to poke or scrape the bolt. The holes are metered and have to stay that way. Check for spark, check your air filter, see if the plug gets wet after you attempt to start. If it doesn't get wet or even smell like gas, then likely you have a fuel flow problem. Try ALL these things and post back; and again, if you have hit something solid recently with the mower, you will have the replace the flywheel shear key. It is a small aluminum $1.00 part so don't worry. Post back as needed. We wish to help.
