steve, it's a two cycle engine. is there a flywheel key that could be broken on a two cycle? and is any timing position that might cause my problem?

  • nanerbits Apr 29, 2009

I have the same problem. Someone looked at the mower last year and said it was the flywheel key, but i have no idea where it is located, and i can not get ahold of that person. Any help would be appreciated!

Does it have a two cycle or four cycle engine on this unit????
if it's two cycle the piston and rings might me burnt and scored....
if it's four cycle, you need to check to see if the flywheel key is broken.didyou happen to hit some thing the last time you mowed????.to check the flywheel key you need to take off the blower housing so you can take off the center bolt that hold the flywheel'll be able to see if the key is broken or not...

yep all small motors have a flywheel key, that's what controls the timing of the motor.if it's broke the timing is off so it's firing at the wrong time.if you take the fly wheel nut off you can look at the keyway and see if it's lined up with crank shaft keyway.

Toro mower won t start unless sprayed with starter fluid-then runs fine

The carb needs cleaning.. Has the mower been sitting for a period of time ? If so the gasoline evaporates and leaves a gummy "varnish" type residue in the carb.. Gumming up things and making them stick..

My toro push mower has a 6.75 Briggs and Stratton it was running great and it died iI checked for fire and it has fire I cleanded the carb bowl no dirt or water I cleaned the points and yhe float is...

You need to see if you are getting spark at the plug.

Blue spark is good
White spark, not so good
NO spark, not good. This would mean that the Ignition Coil is bad.

Let me know if you need more help.

I replaced fuel filter and lines but now mower will not start.... I thought I may have installed filter wrong way so I turned it around and tried again, but would not start.

See if your mower has a float bowl on bottom of carb, if so then remove that and see if gas runs out with the float in down position..hanging, then lightly push float up and see if gas stops running, if that is o.k. then clean screw that holds bvowl on and there are 2 holes in this screw, 1 large and 1 tiny make sure they are clean, run a bread tie through the holes then reassemble and check your spark plug and see if it is wet or fludded, dry it off and try to start again, try to spray carb cleaner in carb and pull once started you may have to choke to keep going till all your OLD gas is ran through....Good Luck

Toro push mower with B & S engine won' start unless I put gas in spark plug hole.. I removed carburater bowl and bolt holding bowl is clear. What's wrong?

There is trash in your carburetor blocking the main jet. You are going to have to remove the carburetor and give the carburetor a thorough cleaning. Watch out for the spray carb cleaner, wear safety glasses or a face shield as when cleaning out the carb the passages can redirect back at your face.

I hope this gets you going again.

Have gts toro, engine starts then stops can not get it started.. r s

Your mower engine has to have these things WORKING to run: 1. Compression (engine in good shape) 2. Strong Spark (magneto air gap has to be correct for strong spark) 3. Clean air ( good, clean air filter w/no air leaks) 4. Clean, fresh fuel supply (gas less than 30 days olds with an inline filter installed in mower's fuel line). These things are assuming the mower hasn't struck an immovable object such as concrete, tree stump etc. recently. This will shear the flywheel key and timing may be off so far that engine won't start. So, where would you like to start my friend? Try checking these things. In the meanwhile....we can try to "coax" the engine into running. Remove the spark plug. Get an aerosol can of carb/choke cleaner spray. Spray a couple of shots into the engine. Reinstall plug. Choke the carb and attempt to start. This may or may not work, according to the conditions listed earlier. If this doesn't get it running, remove the plug and try it again.
We are trying to get it to run on its own, so it will start (or attempt to start) drawing fuel from the carburetor. Sometimes the brass bolt that holds the carburetor float bowl on gets clogged. You drain the gas, remove the bolt and clean all the small hole in the bottom and along the sides of it. This bolt is also the main jet of the carb. Cleaning this with carb cleaner can only help. If you do this, use NO metal objects to poke or scrape the bolt. The holes are metered and have to stay that way. Check for spark, check your air filter, see if the plug gets wet after you attempt to start. If it doesn't get wet or even smell like gas, then likely you have a fuel flow problem. Try ALL these things and post back; and again, if you have hit something solid recently with the mower, you will have the replace the flywheel shear key. It is a small aluminum $1.00 part so don't worry. Post back as needed. We wish to help.

My lawn mower will start but will not stay started. If I continue to prime it it will go but as soon as I stop priming it it stops. I replaced the air filter, gas filter and spark plug and the problem...

I called my local Toro dealer about this problem and he immediately said "Oh, you've got a clogged carburetor". He directed me to tip the mower on it's left side, remove the air filter and just spray carb cleaner into the carburetor without removing the carb. He said it is common for a blade of grass to get in there and clog it. The pressure from the carb spray will usually dislodge a blade of grass. He also cautioned against removing the air cleaner assembly unless necessary. He said they warp easily and once you remove them, they rarely go back on cleanly ie without leaking, and you'll need to replace it. Also, if it's not too dirty, just adding Seafoam to your fuel can be very effective. For the $10 cost of a can of carb cleaner and a can of Seafoam, this worked for me.

I have a Toro 22" Recycler Mower. Never had problems starting before til now. Have gas, oil level fine, new filter and spark plug. Why not start

Youwill need to disassemble the carburetor and spray withcarb.cleaner.

Use a Den Tek Brush, (,to clean the small portals in carb. These portals can become blocked. Reassemble and start.

If the carb. parts are more than 4 years old, you may have to replace them.

If you need further assistance on:

Just let me know.

Toro recycler will run until primed gas is consumed.

The problem is that the gas that sat in the carb all winter glazed it over and gummed it up. Begin by going to any auto parts store, like an aiutozone, and getting a bottle of carb. cleaner. Seafoam is one I use. Add it to your gas, one ounce per gallon of gas. Also, pick up a can of engine starting spray.

Remove the air filter and spray the engine starting spray into the air intake. Pull start the engine and give it additional squirts of engine starting spray until it runs smoothly.

My lawn mower started right up yesterday, today it won't start. is there a safety switch somewhere?

Smiley7310ja, keep smiling! Go to a hardware store and buy some quick start. It's like either and nitro. Take your air filter out and while starting spray into carbuerator. The quick start is so hot as long as your gas line is clear it will ignite which then draws the gasoline primed into the engine. As far as a safety switch if nothing is near the spark plug and your hand is holding the kill bar you should be good to go! Let me know that you didn't blow yourself up. I hope it worked. It always does for me. Drop me a line.
