Question about Sony KDS-60A2000 60" HDTV

28 Answers

I have a sony KDS-60A2000 that wont poer on

I was getting the 5 blinking light code that said the ballast was bad. I purchased one from Partstore.com and replaced the board only to get the same 5 blinking lights. I saw other forums say it could be the bulb so I ordedred a bulb and know I get a continuous blinking red light. The tv powers up for 4 or 5 seconds (nopicture) then clicks off and begins the continuous blinking.

  • Freddy Torres Mar 10, 2009

Where do I find the signal board and what do I look for.

  • Freddy Torres Mar 10, 2009

The new bulb is a Phillips P22-100/120W 1.0

  • Freddy Torres Mar 10, 2009

The bulb is a brand new Phillips bulb from Partstore.com

  • Freddy Torres Mar 10, 2009

The TV doesnt power on so I can not access the Menu

  • Freddy Torres Mar 10, 2009

I noticed that the 5 blinking red lights comes from the power led when I have the old bulb in. With the new bulb i get a constant blinking light from the lamp led.

  • Freddy Torres Mar 10, 2009

Partsstore online sent me a bulb phillips P22 as a replacement for the XL-5200 is that right

  • Freddy Torres Mar 10, 2009

Is it possible to have a faulty IC on both the old and new ballast

  • Freddy Torres Mar 10, 2009

I am new to fixya so I cannot see any previous solutions.

  • Freddy Torres Mar 10, 2009

Is there a way to test or self replace the color wheel.

  • Freddy Torres Mar 10, 2009

I cannot find any info on a Sony Color Wheel. Most sites state that these 2006 Sony models did not come with a color wheel.

  • Freddy Torres Mar 10, 2009

The lamp fan turns on for 3-5 seconds then shuts off

  • Freddy Torres Mar 10, 2009

I will try to contact Partstoreonline to exchange the bulb

  • Freddy Torres Mar 11, 2009

I unplugged the main power wire from the ballast and then plugged the TV back in and it does the same thing.

  • Freddy Torres Mar 11, 2009

I have become so familiar with this tv as as many times as I have taken it apart and put it back together. I have checked every connection multiple times. I am trying to see if I can get a replacement bulb and Ballast from Partsstoreonline.

Five blink was "Lamp driver error".
Ththat means that it was detected a faulty lamp driver (aka power block , or ballast board).
You can get same error because of a defective lamp, that was the real problem in your case.

Now that the you replaced the lamp the TV starts , but goes immediately in general protection error state, this probably in consequence of a bad assemblage either of ballast board or bulb, as this error did not come up before (continuous blinking).

Unfortunately, the diagnostic codes are generic indicators only. This can be caused by a bad part or a poor cable connection. Since you have purchased the parts already, try re-installing them paying particular attention to any cables or screws. These sets have many interlocks that must be activated in order for the set to turn on. If the part is not entirely seated, the interlock will not be activated and the set will report a problem. Re-instlall the ballast, the lamp and make sure that the access doors are fully closed.

Keep us posted.

If the reseating has had no effect as you report, then I would guess that you received a ballast that was DOA. While rare, this does occur. The partsstore should be willing to replace the part at no cost to you. They may request that you return the initial one first.

    Keep us posted.

    Thanks,

Hello There

Don't you just love modern technology?!! Panasonics have the same problems. The problem is a power supply problem. In particular some of the IC's on the power supply board die due to what they call dry solder problems. In short the power supply/circuit board needs to be changed.

Not sure how long you've had the TV but it might be worth doing a rapair cost analysis to see if you would be better off with a new TV.

Hope this helps

5 blinks does mean "Lamp Driver is Faulty" and usually indicates a bad ballast.
It is not uncommon for a ballast to fail even when it is new.

This is indicative of another simultaneous problem.

2 flashes - Temp Over - (lamp heating abnormally)
3 flashes - Lamp Cover - (lamp cover not attached correctly)
4 flashes - Fan Error - (fan power not supplied or connected properly)
5 flashes - Lamp Driver - (lamp driver faulty)
6 flashes - Power Error - (D5V is not supplied)
7 flashes - Audio Prot - (speaker line is shorted)
8 flashes - Power OVP - (7v is over voltage)
9 flashes - Device Error - (temp sensors, Bus decoder ICs...)

Open the lamp door and try to power on unit.

Hi..AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby
indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the
self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the
video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other
components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220
on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking,
try turning up screen slightly.

It has to be something with the circuits there is probably some kind of moisture or corrosion on the main board or the circuit board, I have a Mitsubishi 72in HD tv and it does the same thing it just continually blinks and wont power on a certified repairest came over and said that there was moisture on the circuit board. hope this helps.

Hi,
You should ask Sony XL-5200 bulb from Part Store and return compatible bulb.
Sony DLP TV does not have color wheel thing inside.
5 times blinks represent problem in Lamp (bulb) driver circuit and in my opinion, Philips bulb is not compatible with your Sony TV. so please demand original XL-5200 bulb.
After replacement of bulb, make sure that lamp door is seated properly.
need further info, write as comments.

Open up the back and adjust the top control on the flyback transformer by turning it clockwise just a bit until the picture returns. This should only take a slight turn. The flyback is the large part with the red wire coming out of the top. Be careful as there is high voltage in that area. If the picture comnes on and stays on, then the tube is starting to fail. This adjustment is just a temporary "fix" and will buy you time to look for a replacement set.

There should be a 3-way splitter type of thing at the other end of the
red wire from the flyback. That should have the adjustments on it for
each tube. Try each one, one at a time. The one that kicks in the set
will be the tube that is starting to fail.

First thing I need you to do is, while your behind the set and close to the area of the ballast, have someone turn the set on and you listen for the ballast trying to start, it will sound like an arcing sound, and also the fans are running. Make sure the lamp door is secure. If the fans are running but you don't hear the ballast trying to start then I would assume without being there that the Color Wheel is not turning, which is probably bad. The first thing in that section to start is the color wheel, if that's ok, then the ballast and finally the lamp and that's it. The reason could be for the same blinks meaning the ballast, is the color wheel must start first if it does'nt the ballast won't and the micro detects it didn't start, giving that code. Let me know if you need further help!

Did you hear the ballast try to start and fans running?

  • Jim Krause Mar 10, 2009

Well, since the inception of DLP sets ( Digital Light Processor) they have used what is called a light engine which has a color wheel. In the past year Samsung came out with a LED version which eliminated a color wheel and Mitsubishi came out with laser which did basically the same thing. All of our suppliers are selling the optics block for your set which we found incorporated everything including the DM. (digital module). I am curious to know what type of light processing system you have since your friend at sony says you have no color wheel.

  • Jim Krause Mar 10, 2009

Did you also make sure the lamp fan is running, try giving it a spin and see if it starts.

I don't think this will help you much, but if you'd like to try it:

To reset your tv to factory settings, Hold down the 'up' arrow on your remote control, press the 'power' button on the tv, release the 'power' button, then release the 'up' arrow on the remote control. The tv should turn off, then on again with intitial setup.

I hope your Philips was the equivalent of the Sony XL-5200.

Good luck!

Lets talk about reset Tv.

There would be 2 ways :-

1. Combination of buttons on remote.Refer maual.
2. Unplug the cord for 4 hours and it would reset tv when you plug in the cord after 4 hours.

Now, in regards to 5 blinks...

Five blinks may have to do with the AKB circuit (Automatic Kathode Biasing) or control of the bias on the picture tube guns.

There is a nice discussion about the circuit

http://www.agoraquest.com/viewtopic.php?topic=15966&forum=34

though it's for sony KV-32FS17, it's the same circuit for your Tv.

If you know how to get into the service mode (www.fixyourowntv.com) and are brave you may hunt around for the AKB adjustment and see if that will help. I don't know if this model even has an AKB adjustment like the bigger sets do; this one may be fixed at the factory.

The best i can do for you to arrange a service manual for a similar model....

http://www.schematicsforfree.com/archive/file/Sony/Video/Sony%20KV32FX20%20Chassis%20BE3E%20Service%20and%20Schematic.pdf

Its around 8 mb. Go to page no. 7 to look at AKB circuits.

If you are satisfied, Do rate this solution as Fixya.

Thanks for using fixya.

Try resetting the unit by going into service mode as errors doesn't get cleared after replacing the faulty part

Clearing/Reset is done by going into the service mode ( press display, then channel, 5, volume plus, then power) then press 8 and Enter, which will return everything to the factory preset condition.

Please ask for further clarifications.

And after, it has entered the service mode,

Use numbers '1' and '4' to select the item to adjust
Write down the old value in the corner.
Use the '3' and '6' to adjust the value of the data.
When you have made all the adjustments you want press 'Mute' then 'Enter' to exit.
