Hello, it is normal for the adapters to get pretty hot, almost too hot to touch. Should not be a problem to the laptop.

Lenovo laptop's charging point getting hot

many thing made that happened, but the important thing is to check whether ur charger gives a 19V-21V or higher!, u can use a multimeter, or voltmeter.. if OK check if there is a space between the laptops connector nd its charging port . because the connector's metal can get hot if it's not connected as well...

GOOD LUCK

It is normal for the adapter to run warm, but it shouldn't feel so hot you can't touch it. Since you have tried a couple of replacement batteries and still have the same trouble, it's safe to assume that either your adapter is bad or that there's something wrong on the computer system board. New adapters are easy to find and not very expensive (here's one seller on eBay), so that would be the next thing to try.

If the motherboard is the trouble (something wrong with the charging circuit), that's replaceable as well but it's not a cheap or simple repair. A replacement board may cost $100 to $200 for a used and tested part, and over $300 for a new one from an HP-authorized part seller, and installing the replacement can be very tedious. It might be more economical to replace the computer if the motherboard is bad. Try a new charger first.

When plugged in the unit starts to smell hot like an electical burn,

Turn it on turn it over and see if the fan is operating. If not power your lap top off and replace the fan. You may have to not use this computer until the fan is replaced it is advisable not to. The smell you have may be dust smell when it gets hot. Clean throughly and make sure that all the dust is out of your computer. Also recommended a lap fan also which goes underneath the laptop to assist with cooling.
Lap tops are very touchy and need to be kept cool at all times otherwise you will be purchasing a new lap top if you do not take care of the cleaning or the cooling or the fan not working or spinning slowly. Check all this out. Critical if you do not understand what I mean take your computer to a local shop for immediate care. I hope this assisted you. John

There are isues with HP external power supplies - if it is a dv7-3xxx series you require AC Smart adapter (120 watt) - 100-240VAC input, 50-60Hz, 2.5A - 18.5VDC output, 6.5A, Pt No 463953-001

for earlier models require AC Smart power adapter (90 watt) - 100-240VAC input, 47-63Hz - 19.0VDC output, 4.74A, 90 watts, with power factor correction (PFC) 463955-001
If you are within the warranty period utilize that warranty if not contact HP and see what price a replacement external power pack is.

Charger is too hot

Some chargers do run a bit on the hot side. Check your charger with an ohm meter to see if it's getting the proper output. If not, then the charger is struggling to run the machine, and this is causing it to heat up. Also keep in mind that if the charger isn't getting the proper output to the machine, it can damage the new battery or the machine, and will need to be replaced.
