These four pin connectors coming from the power supply are typically used to power the drives...you probably have the same type of connector plugged into the back of the hard drive, the optical drive, etc...There are sometimes other uses for them (such as certain AGPcards, SCSI cards, whatnot.) The reason there is one just hanging loose is because the manufacturer uses a power supply that can support additional drives. This connector has nothing to do with your internet or network connections. What did you install, and what other hardware is your system running? How are you connecting to the internet?

- I would think so that the network cable is unplugged to your computer. Just like a telephone cord,

I'm trying to find out if the whole front panel power switch on the dell dimension 8300 can be replaced with a generic brand . I have changed the motherboard, replacing it with a SIS 648FX Foxconn board....

The problem you're running into is that Dell uses proprietary parts, like quite a few manufacturers still do.The board you bought should have come with a manual on a CD or DVD.You can look through the manual and see what the connections are, they're even printed, usually,on the board beside each set of pins. It's very small print.
What you have going for you is that the Dell multi-plug is also labeled as to what wires are for each application. You'll have to cut the plug off and put individual connectors on each wire, then connect them to the corresponding pins. You can get the parts at an electronic supply store, even Radio Shack.
Just be careful, and make sure that if your hands are inside the case, the cord is unplugged.

UNPLUGED

Ribbons you should have 2 one for the cd rom drives and one for the harddrives, Look closley on the borad and it will say next to the connector which is which, the ata one will go to the harddrive and the ide one will go to the cd rom drive the end that only has one connector goes into the borad, the one with 2 connectors kinda close goes into the compoents, DO you have more than one hd if so you may need to find out which one is the master and which is the slave!

Inter net browser opens but doesn't connect, internet connection is connected but cant connect to the browser? I'm using either Firefox or IE on a dell 8300 that had a vundo problem. since I ran a clean up...

this is typical, there's a new virus that overwrites the dns server details and the only fix for this problem is either to waste hours recovering dns or doing a clean installation will fix it. "clean installation means format the hard drive, and re-install your operating system"

Install memory

No. Your Dell Dimension uses PC-2100 type memory. Your Dell Dimension can support up to 1GB of memory. For optimal performance install the maximum amount of memory in each socket. Your Dell Dimension 4500 has 2 banks of 1 socket each for a total of 2 memory sockets.
