Question about NetGear RangeMax WPN824 Router

Can't set up security for Netgear 824

I'm not able to set up the security on the Netgear 824 even though I was able to get the wifi working quickly. The instructions say "The wireless router provides highly effective security features, which are covered in detail in the full reference manual that is available from a link on the CD as well as a link in the main menu of your router." I can't find this. Is it because I'm a Mac user?

Much thanks for the quick reply. It worked. However, I'm now having trouble getting my other computers (also Macs) to log on. The airport shows that I'm connected yet I can't open any URL. I've posted my problem on a separate FixYa posting as well.

Thanks, NC, especially for offering your help even if you're not a regular mac user.
I'm just not convinced that this Netgear is that mac friendly and much improvement from my old Belkin router. I went to the URL recommended and it doesn't seem to be what I'm looking for.
    I greatly appreciate your help.

LOL you bought it, you get to figure out how it works.

I used a MAC for a day, and the owner had to tell me how everything works. If you can get to the internet, I imagine you can go to www.routerlogin.com and get access to the Netgear. The Wireless Settings tab on my Netgear brings up text sensitive help on making security and wireless work.

Sigh, you're gonna make me look stupid in an international forum aren't you :-)

Is an Airport the wireless device for a MAC or is it a wireless access point? Can you log into it by connecting to it with a network cable? In networkland, we configure a WAP by it's initial fixted address that sometimes happens to be the same (192.168.1.1) as the Netgear router default address. In that case, we log into the AP via a seperate cable and change its address to something else, like 192.168.1.251.

When you log into the aforementioned www.routerlogin.com, one of the tabs is attached devices. You can see the ip and the "MAC" addresses of the attached devices. Start with just the computer that works, link to the Netgear, and click attached devices. Then plug in the Airport and see if the MAC address shows up and gives an IP address. You may have to configure the Airport. I don't exactly know how to do that, but the internet was my friend :-)

    http://www.macwireless.com/downloads/ins...

shows how to access MAC's TCP IP stuff. Perhaps you can use it to configure your airport. If you pick 192.168.1.5, make sure that your Netgear gives out IP addresses starting at 51. Also, see if you can't make the Airport NOT give out DHCP addresses. Now all of your addresses will be given out in the Netgear and you can always get to it via the routerlogin.

This article describes how to set up a NETGEAR EX6100 in Extender Mode
The extender connects wirelessly to your existing WiFi network, and then it creates a new WiFi extended network and links the two WiFi networks.
Symptoms:
Cannot connect to extender
Extender broadcasting EX6100_NETGEAR_2GEXT
Extender broadcasting EX6100_NETGEAR_5GEXT
Extender cannot access Internet or network
Process:
1. Place your extender in the same room as your WiFi router.
2. Plug the extender into an electric outlet and wait one minute. The PowerLED lights green.
If the Power LED does not light, press the Power button on the side.
3. Make sure that the mode switch on the extender is set to Extender.
4. Use a WiFi network utility on a computer or mobile device to find and connect to the EX6100_NETGEAR_2GEXT or EX6100_NETGEAR_5GEXT (SSID) WiFi network.
Note: EX6100_NETGEAR_2GEXT and EX6100_NETGEAR_5GEXT are the default name of your extender's wireless networks, and by default it is unsecured. If you changed the wireless name or security in the past, connect to the new name or enter the passphrase when prompted. EX6100_NETGEAR_5GEXT is only visible if your wireless adapter is 5 GHz capable.
After the wireless connection with the computer or mobile device is established, the Client Link LED lights solid green.

Note: If your router does not support the 5GHz band, click the Skip button.
9. Select Private Network(home network) or Public Network radio button, and click Continue.
Note: Selecting Public Network will enable NAT and DHCP on the EX6100. For more info on NAT refer to: What is NAT (Network Address Translation)?
10. Type the name (SSID) for your WiFi extended network in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz Network Name (SSID) field and click the Continue button.
Note: You can use the same security settings as your existing network by selecting the Use the same security mode check box.
The WiFi extended network settings are applied.
11. Use a WiFi network manager on a mobile device or computer to connect to the extenders newly created WiFi network.
12. Click on the check box and click on Continue to finalize the installation.
13. Unplug the extender and move it to a new location closer to the area with a poor WiFi signal.
Note: The location you choose must be within the range of your existing WiFi router network.
14. Plug the extender into an electrical outlet and wait one minute. The Power LED lights green. Connect to the extender network and enjoy the extended Wifi network.

I cannot connect to the WIFI at work, but I can connect to my WIFI network at home, and other public networks. The wireless network at work is pushed by a D-Link 8200AP with a WAP security, just like it is...

Your laptop cannot connect to your work's wireless network because the security settings (ir WAP) in the D-Link is different to the security setting in your Netgear.
The wireless card in your laptop will need the settings changed to suit the D-Link's wireless settings ie the SSID and WAP.
You will need to change the wireless card settings in your laptop back to the Netgear's wireless settings to connect to your wireless network at home.
Some wireless cards allow you to set up different profiles for different wireless networks which allow you to switch wireless networks easily by just selecting the profile for the network you want to connect to.

How to set a security cod for wifi

This is a Quick and easy fix!
  1. Use an Ethernet cable to connect a computer to any one of the four LAN ports of the NETGEAR router.
  2. In a web browser, enter the router's IP address - either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 by default.
  3. When prompted for a Username and Password, enter the default username and password (admin; password) unless you have already changed it. NETGEAR recommends changing the default password to increase the security of your network.

Select Wireless Settings from the Setup menu in the left-hand navigation bar.
  4. Under Wireless Network, enter your desired network name in the Name (SSID) box.
  5. Under Security Options, select WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES].
  6. Under Security Options (WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK), enter your desired network password into the Passphrase box.
    • WRITE DOWN or KEEP NOTE of your network name, security option and passphrase - you will require them to connect wireless computers and devices to your network.
  7. Click Apply to save the settings.

I have a Netgear router -but I dont have the same computer that I used to set up Internet connection. My router works but is not secure

the computer you have should make no difference to how the router works.
If your wifi connection is insecure you will need to login to it and add the security under the advanced/wireless (wifi) options and add a password.
if you connect to the router with a cable then just turn off (disable) the wifi, you don't need to set up the security.

Verification and signal problems

Hi Sir F,

You don't need to do a re-install of the DLink WiFi adaptor since I believe it is running as it should (as you posted). All that is needed is to configure it to exclusively select only your NetGear WiFi Router. This could be done in the DLInk Wizard (Start/All Programs/DLink.../) set the DLInk to connect only to the SSID of your NetGear. Though it may pick up your neighbors WiFi, the DLink will only acknowledge the presence of the other WiFi but connect only and always to the NetGear.

A couple of other things that may help improve your WiFi connection. Use static IP add in your PC to match that of the NetGear, disable wireless security (WEP or WPA) but rather enable MAC filter and input that of your PC's WiFi Networking Card.

Should you need a more detailed instructions, pls post back the model of your router and the make/model of your PC as well as your OS.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
