Question about Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook

1 Answer

I need to replace the F2 key and the key just left of the number 1 key on my dell 6000 inspiron key board. I am having trouble finding the key to buy for the repair. I am assuming that it is a small do able task even for me? Thanks

Dell don't appear to sell spares down to this level - when a key on mine "broke" recently, they sent me a complete replacement keyboard.

Bearing in mind that the machine was a couple of days out of warranty and that the damage was clearly down to our carelessness rather than theirs, I thought it pretty decent of them to give it to me for free.

You might try salvaging the keyboard off a dead notebook, and either fitting it complete, or salvaging the relevant keys off it.

Changing the keyboard out is quick and easy (You'll find instructions for doing it buried in the "Dell Support Centre" area on your machine).

Fitting salvaged keycaps to an existing keyboard is fiddly: There are two plastic levers which between them form a pantograph underneath the keycap. The keycaps will come off easily enough if you pull them straight out, trying not to lose the two plastic levers which hold them on. From memory, to refit them, you need to click one of the levers into the keycap, then both into the base of the keyboard, then press down hard on the keycap until the last bit clips into place - then repeat several times until you get it right! (The last connection needs to be the fixed, rather than the sliding link to the keycap).

How to find wireless switch on dell inspiron 6000 laptop running windows XP

Hi there,

There is no physical wireles switch on your laptop. You should however, be able to hold down the "fn" key at bottom left of the keyboard and then hit the F2 key at top left to turn your wireless on or off. If that does not provide the desired effect, then your wireles adapter may be disabled, in which case you should right click on the wireless icon in the bottom right system tray and choose "Repair" or "Enable".

Best of luck to you.

CANNOT SWITCH THE WIRELESS ON...ITS A INSPIRON 6000

Have you tried "Fn+F2" (both keys together) by any chance? If that still fails, you might need to check if you have the proper wireless card driver installed (can download the latest Dell wireless drivers from their website)

There is no way around having one - your laptop will overheat and cause much more damage than without having one - good news is, they're easy to replace and not expensive. Here's a link for one..but try ebay as well..

Time to buy a new. If under warranty you might be able to get a new one for free. They can be cheap on the web. Just google part number. Avoid the company, they usually charge more.

You can also pick up the batteries less expensive than most computer places at batteries plus. And yes it sounds as though it is the batteries charge is getting low, especially if it runs fine when the battery is out and you have it plugged in.
