Close all open programs

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.
Hope this helps

My tsstcorp cdw/dvd TS-H492C rom is not being displayed on my comp....it displays a message... Dat is windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device....

Hi
I see this is a month old,but I'll answer this for anyone doing a future search that may come across this thread.
The link is to Microsoft's on-line repair center. This will fix several error codes, including 41,and is probably the first thing to try when your optical drive is installed but Windows can't find it.
If this helps with your problem, and anyone in the future, would you rate my post please?
Thanks
Bob

HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N not regognized on laptop (code 41)

if ur using HP computer then start tapping F10 immediately when u start ur comp.. this will take u to Bios.. u should be able to see ur CD/DVD rom there..
second.. Error 41 normally means comp. is unable to read the CD/DVD rom properly.. heres wht u need to do ..
  1. Click Start vistastartbutton.jpg, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in thePrograms list.

securityshield.jpg If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
  2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
  3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
  4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
  5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
  6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
  7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
let me know if this resolved ur issue.. regards, guru

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) Laptop Levono y530, device dvd rw optiarc AD-7580s I tried to uninstall & reinstall it, but...

Give this a whirl:
CD-Rom stops working. After checking device manager you find an exclamation mark on the drive. It doesn't mean the drive is dead. It could be an upperfilter or lowerfilter registry issue that is keeping you from accessing the cd drive.

This fix worked for my client:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip

Also, try this fix from microsoft.

CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error code 31, code 32, code 19, code 39, or code 41.

Try this before replacing the drive and remember that you may have to reinstall some burning software.

What did I do wrong? I copied doc files to a CD.

Is it a dvd-rom, dvd-rw, cd-rom, cd-rw?

What is the cd/dvd disk drive you are using?
(A dvd-rom, dvd-rw, cd-rom, cd-rw?)

This may be the problem.

CD/RW and DVD Rom have disappeared and will not register

Maria,

Have you searched Microsoft.com for a solution to your disappearing optical drive? First (from my own experience only) see if there is an ERROR CODE (i.e. code 39 or 41, etc) in your Windows XP Device Manager.... For this code #, open (double-click) Properties in Device Mgr. If not already, you'll find info online about removing upper- and lower filters from your Registry. BUT (good news!) Microsoft.com does have an Automated Repair for this maneuver which is ultra-easy----simply download the Fix, follow its simple wizard, and restart Windows. Hope it works as quickly and flawlessly for you as it did for me (also on a Dell running XP at the time).

Did you try axcessing the drive manually ??? Start > My computer > D:(you cd drive),, If it doesnt show up then the drive may be damamged. If it does you just need to associate the .ext with a program. Double click on the drive if a option box doesnt open up, you should see the audio files.. just right click on one and select properties. You should see the program the file is associated with. Just click change and select another program.
