I can't install my Maxtor External Hard Drive to my mac

I have a mac book OS X / 10.4.
I want to back up my files so bought a Maxtor Basic Portable Storage 250 GB.
It came with no instructions and nothing happens when I attaching it to my mac through a USB connection. Only an icon appears on my desktop...

Can anyone please help me install it...??

Kind Regards,
Anna

Hey anna dont worry , you need to mac it because right now its for pc to do that go to the utility folder
which is in applications, the run disk utility

whislt the external drive is hooked up.
in the disk utility click on the drive, and earse using "mac extended"
once finished, plug it out and in again and it should work

My Mac OS X doesn't recognize my Maxtor One Touch

Try unplugging both the power and data cables from both the computer and the hard drive. Let the hard drive spin down. Plug the cables back in. It should become visible with no loss of files.

How to Connect Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 320Gb to PC

I have one as well running along with a PC. PCs and Macs are formatted differently. Go to www.maxtor.com and create a search for reformatting from a Mac to a PC with your Operating System in the search as well. Should have no problems after doing that. It will tell you and or show you where and how to reformat.

Maxtor Basics portable 320gb Mac to pc compatability problems

Hi Tys,

I had a similar issue with my Maxtor Basics portable 500GB drive. I hadn't formatted mine yet, but had heard there were issues, so decided to find out before I start. I even saw your post here looking for an answer. Finally, one of my friends told me the following solution, which worked fine for me:

Don't format the drive as any of the Mac OS Extended options, simply reformat it as MS-DOS (it should be one of the options in Disk Utilities when you choose Erase and go to the Volume Format dropdown list).

Your Mac should be able to recognise and use the drive in this format and it works for PCs. Transferring files between the two shouldn't be a problem.

A thing to note, though, is that these Maxtor drives apparently come ready-formatted as MS-DOS (mine did). But while my Mac recognised the drive, I couldn't copy files on to it. If this happens, erase this MS-DOS formatting with... MS-DOS. Don't ask me why this works, I'm not a Mac Genius, but now my Maxtor is trouble-free and can transfer files from PC to Mac and back again.

Hope this works out for ya!

K

Hi, I lost user manual, need to restore files back to computer.

Provided that you can find your external drive using My Computer feature, double click on that drive icon and search the drive for the files you wish to put on the computer drive (C drive). If you right click the file or folder on the Maxtor external drive and then choose copy, you can go to the folder on the C drive that you want to paste them into, select it and then right click the folder icon and choose paste to put them into the folder. To make the process quicker, you might choose to paste all files and/or files from the Maxtor drive onto the computer desktop and then move them around later.

Maxtor one touch iii mini

You have a possible corrupted file. Open My Computer and right-click the drive icon. Click PROPERTIES in the menu. Click TOOLS. Click CHECK NOW. Click a check into the AUTOMATICALLY FIX FILE SYSTEM ERRORS box. Click START. The OS may tell you a reboot is required.
If all else fails, dump the data to some other storage device and use DISK MANAGER to delete the partion, make a new partition and format.

Errors when Backing up information from hard drive.

I have several drives backed up and they work fine whenever they are imaged. anyway.. These drives are made for use in Windows and Mac enviorments. It is usually MAC users that have this problem. They are usually preformatted using fat32. because the drive is usually for storage fat32 is sufficent...but there are certain characters that fat32 dosen't care for...Do you have file naming scheme that uses odd characters? if so Those are the file names the error is refferring to. You may choose to reformat the drive using fat32(again) or NTFS(note fat32 has a better chance of data recovery just in case)your main hard drive might be NTFS. The rest is only important if you use a MAC Now if you have a MAC see below. How do I initialise the external drive for Mac OS X? Preparing the Seagate/Maxtor external hard drive in Mac OS X Mac OS X cannot mount a FAT32 partition larger than 137 GB (128 GB binary value). Our partiton is 160 GB (149 GB binary value). Since your external drive comes with a large FAT32 partition preinstalled you will need to initialise the drive to use it in Mac OS X. WARNING: Initialising or partitioning the drive will erase all data on the drive. If you have used this drive on another computer take the drive back to that computer and copy all data off of the drive before proceeding. When the drive was plugged into the Macintosh you probably noticed a message reporting an error that it cannot read the volume. At this point you have the option to initialise the drive. If you missed that message you can initialise the drive manually. Initialising the drive in OS X If you see the volume error, you can click the Initialise option. If you do not see it, then go to Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. In Disk Utility: Select the external drive (149.05 GB). Be sure you select the correct drive before proceeding. If you have more than one 160 GB drive then be sure to select the correct one. 1. Go to the Erase tab. 2. Choose the type of partition (Mac OS Extended). 3. Type a volume label. 4. Tick the box that says "Install Mac OS 9 drivers". If this option is not selected, this device cannot be used by a computer running Mac OS 9. This option does not affect Classic. 5. Click Erase. 6. Read the prompt and Click on Erase again if you agree to erase all the data and you are sure the correct drive is selected. 7. The drive will now show on the desktop with a Firewire icon and the volume label as the name. Additional Information For more information on the FAT32 partition size limit in Mac OS X please read document number 107483 on Apple's support web site. For more information about formatting drives in Mac OS visit Apple's support web site. For more information about decimal versus binary capacity values visit our FAQ on the subject. Let me know what happens. Good Luck, Tim
