Question about Dell Inspiron E1505 Notebook

1 Answer

Memory module Hi, I have a gateway solo 5300 bought it cheap with no memory. Bought a module (256mb 133 mhz (16Mx64)) fitted it but no screen action. After searching for info I think that I should maybe have bought a module with 100MHz. Can u confirm or am I totally off the mark. Any advice would be appreciated, Thanks

Model E1505 is not listed. Find a manual somewhere else or see if 1501 is a 100 mhz model. My guess it their is something wrong with it(the motherboard?) is the reason it doesn't work?

It doesn't matter if the memory you bought is a higher spec. (speed) it will still run on a lower memory spec. laptop at the lower speed.

It is only a slight problem if you mix different speed memory. If the laptop uses high speed memory and you mix high speed and low speed together in this laptop, the memory will only run at the slower speed, therefore the laptop will operate slower.

0 MB on-board memory expandable to 512 MB
Two SO-DIMM slots
SO-DIMM sockets accept 8-, 16-, 32-, 64-, 128-, and 256-MB SDRAM modules in any combination.
Use only PC100 memory modules.
so yeah you bought the wrong ram

Just installed 2 512 mb memory but when i turn the laptop on the fan turns on and the lights blink but it works fine with old memory. and others have upgraded memory to 2 gb when the max is 1 gb and theirs...

Sound like you have two questions:

1) Why does my new memory not work?

2) Can I upgrade to 2 GB?

For Question #1, my thought is that maybe the new memory does not match up the laptops specifications. According to Gateway's website, "This notebook has two 200-pin industry standard DDR-SODIMM sockets that can accept 266 MHz DDR RAM memory module." Is the new memory 266 MHz? If not, that could be your problem and you should get the appropriate type of memory.

If the memory you purchased is 266 MHz, you probably have defective hardware and should seek a refund or replacement.

As for Question #2, you can try it but you may waste your money. If the manufacturer says the max memory allowed is 1 GB, it probably is true. I would only try it if you could get free, cheap or borrowed memory.

Gateway says max RAM is two 128mb modules but heard two 256mb modules will fit...true?

You need to make sure you have a processor of at least 700mhz. Two 256MB modules no problem. Many times you can buy a used laptop on ebay (either 9300 or Compaq armada e500) with the two 256MB modules included a lot cheaper than just buying 2 new 256MB modules. The Compaq Armada and 9300 modules interchangeable. Either way, you can still buy 2- 256MB modules(PC100/133 SDRAM 144PIN LOW DENSITY) for under $40.00 shipped. Very easy to install. I suppose if you have a P4 processor you could even go larger. I use Linux, which is 3-4 times faster than windows anyways, with no viruses etc. I have two 9300 laptops running like so with no problems whatsoever. Extremely fast(with ubuntu), too! If you haven't tried Ubuntu operating system you haven't lived. I'm no computer geek and find it so simple and fast. Free downloads on internet or buy a Live CD on ebay for a buck to try out without having to install.

I have bought a compaq presario 1200ap i want to upgrade the ram what should i use 100mhz or 133mhz some websites say either can u help plz

Does not matter, the laptop runs at the 100 mhz speed so the 133 mhz memory will simply run at the slower speed.

Wireless switch on model solo 5300

Hi. Not enough information. Do you want a switch? Do you need to FIND a switch? Is it a Gateway notebook?
The specifications for the Gateway Solo 5300 do not indicate a wireless system as part of the original unit.
See:
http://support.gateway.com/s/manlib/Notebooks/Solo5300/8508144/8508144.htm

Most units with PC100 memory (like this one) did not come with wireless. You will likely need a wireless PCMCIA card.

Gateway 5300 solo fan control and heat monitering

I believe gateway locks their heat limits. But in order to change it you should be able to inside of the BIOS/CMOS/SETUP when first starting the machine.

Laptop doesn't recognize new ram

I would guess that you need PC 133. Some manufactures that were using SDram at the time required PC133 while others would require but allow you to use PC100.

This is the requirement for your laptop from www.crucial.com

Each memory slot can hold SDRAM, PC133 with a maximum of 256MB per slot.*

Hope this helps

Memory problem

Hi

Compaq Presario 700z notebook PC supports 128MB, 192MB, 256MB, 384MB PC 133 SyncDRAM (SDRAM). The Max Capacity is 384MB.

On this basis, I agree to upgrade the BIOS to support a 133Mhz (PC 133) memory module (DIMM).

At current DIMM capacity and prices, ensure the total memory capacity does no exceed 384MB. On the same note, a 512MB DIMM or two 256MB DIMMs are not supported. The best combination to achieve 384MB will be one 128MB and one 256MB DIMMs.
