Sounds like your black pigment (PGBK-5) cartridge has clogged up the printhead or similar.

You could try running a single Deep clean on the that colour alone (use Right click printer > printing preferences > maintenance tab > Deep Cleaning)

If that doesn't work you will probably need to either:
- clean the printhead (see this thread)
- replace the printhead/cartridge

Hope that helps.

If you have a Canon printer I have a quick solution for the black text printing issue: Go to printer properties --> Maintenance --> Ink cartridge settings --> Select "Color Only"

I had the same problem and I just found the solution. The problem is that my i850 printer have 2 sub printing head: one for picture with the 4 colors including black, and one for black text only. It was the black one that was clog. I needed to dissemble the pinting head, clean with alcool and put everything togerther.

I had the same problem and I've tried all kind of logical things all night -- new ink, new printer driver, different computers... Copying the text from word to a gif-file and printing it as gif gave me a print-out, but unfortunately an unreadable one (text not good enough). Then I stumbled across this posting and was ready to try the deep cleaning. But beforehand, for reasons unknown to me, I took out all other colors and just left the black one in, because the letter that I was trying to print had only black text and I was wondering, why the black text was printed when a gif file and not when it is in a word file - so how can it be that the black cartridge should have clogged up the printhead.
What can I say: I do not have an explanation - but as soon as the other colors were out and only the black cartridge remained, that word letter was printed beautifully. As I said, no idea why it worked - but maybe you just try the same simple thing - and hopefully only have black text to print! (My printer is a Canon i960). Good luck!

SOURCE: warning lights blink upon startup, printer freezes

If the lights flash alternately then it is probably your waste ink pads that need cleaning
If the lights flash continuously check your printer for any outstanding documents in the print queue and cancel them then try again

My printer has problems printing dark colours. When printing pictures or text, it leaves horizontal lines on black only. I have a continuis ink system which has lots of black. Any ideas?

Try changing the print paper type to something other than plain paper. Use the matte paper setting, or the photo glossy. The printer will lay down more ink at these specialty settings.

My pictures all look distorted. I have a brand

This type of printer issue could be caused by any of the below possibilities, follow each of the below recommendations for troubleshooting this issue.
Paper issues
When printing on untraditional paper your printer may experience smudges, un-even or crooked text, and/or text that runs off the edges of the paper. To verify this is not the issue try 8 x 11 or standard paper in the printer and see if the printer experiences the same issue.
If your printer is printing fine on standard paper but is unable to print on special paper you could be experiencing any of the below issues with the special type of paper.
  1. Paper is not being fed into the printer properly. Often special sizes of paper will require that you move a slider to the edge of the paper and/or feed the paper into the printer in a non-traditional method. See your printer documentation for steps on feeding different sizes of paper into the printer.
  2. Some types of paper have a different type of texture or surface that may cause smudging, streaks, and/or lines to occur. If you're getting any of these symptoms make sure to try different types of paper. If it is only occurring with a specific type of paper it's likely the paper causing the issue. If these issues happen with all types of paper continue reading the other below possible causes.
Driver related issue
If a printer is printing un-readable text, garbage, or other strange characters it's likely that you're experiencing a driver related issue. Download and install the latest drivers for your printer. A listing of printer manufacturers and links to each of their driver pages can be found on our printer drivers page.
Dirty our out of line printer heads
Your printer may be printing fuzzy, blurry, and/or other faint text because of dirty print heads. All modern printers have some type of printer cleaning, self-test, and/or diagnose mode that can be performed to check and clean the printers print heads and other internal equipment used to print. It is recommended if you use your printer heavily and/or have had it for more than one year that you perform this function. This can be done either through the software included with your printer or by pressing one or more of the buttons at the same time on your printer. Additional information about how to do this can be found in your printers documentation.
Ink or toner cartridge issues
Over time you'll need to replace the ink jet ink cartridges or the toner if you're using a laser printer. If you've been using your printer for more than a few months you may want to check the ink level or toner level. Often with most modern printers you can check these levels through software and/or a light indicator will be flashing or be orange indicating that one or more ink cartridge or toner cartridge needs to be replaced.
If it's been over a year since you've replaced your ink or toner cartridge we suggest you replace it.
Other printer hardware issue
Finally, if you've tried all the above recommendations and continue to experience issues it's possible your printer may be encountering a hardware related issue. Contact the printer manufacturer for additional recommendations and or suggestions on repair and/or replacements.

Change cartridge printer selects for black

Simply cannot. The smaller cart is the dye black, which is used for picture printing. The larger is the pigment black which is used for text printing. You could try printing text as artwork, but i'm not sure this will work, besides, dye ink will bleed on regular paper and not look so crisp.

Printing black horizontal lines below text/on top of pictures

Check the waste recepticle under where the ink cartridges rest in the home position. Over time, ink sprayed into this cup during cleaning cycles builds up to form a small mountain of congealed ink. If this gets too high, it makes contact with the printhead and drags ink across all your prints. If there is a ***** of ink present, scoop it out with a spoon or a popsicle stick.

Dont get it on you, its messy...

I have a Lexmark x1100 Series printer and cannot print anything now. This printer has been working but it stopped printing. Do not have the CD.

Need more info. Any error messages? Did it just stop pumping ink on paper. Are you trying to print black text or color picture? If no error, your cartridges may be empty. If black text does not work, try color picture. Usually one cartridge goes empty and the other still has ink. If color pic prints replace black cartridge. If neither black or color prints at all, it may be a toasted printhead

If you need to reinstall the software, uninstall it, then go to and get new drivers from their site. RESTART COMPUTER! Reinstall from the downloaded file.

If all the above fail to make it work, it is hosed, shop for new printer.

Stripes on Images only - Text OK

Perhaps the CMY color heads need alignment. If you have not already done so, run a head alignment from the driver maintenance section. It will print out a page containing several lines and text, and request you select the closest-aligned images. After this is done, do another image print to check for improvements.
Normally, the printer uses the black cartridge for text and the CMY inks for images (even for black on photo and specialty paper). So when you are printing normal text pages on plain paper, only the black ink is used. A good check for this would be to print a normal text page, but select photo paper in the driver to trick the printer into using the CMY inks to make a substitute black text page. If this looks ok, then you are having issues other than cartridge alignment.

Nothing comes out when I print

Epson 777 will not print. No paper jam. Power light flashing; red error light on steady. Paper does not feed; if paper supply is placed deeper in feed, entire paper supply (about 12 sheets) feeds thru as one sheet normally would , without printing.
