HiI just installed a Memorex external drive to my HP desk top following the set up instructions. The instructions say to "Follow The On Screen Instructions to Complete the Installation". I never got any on screen instructions. I rebooted, and still no instructions. It does not work. I need help!!!
Same exact problem and these suggestions are not working. Any other ideas?

Re: Generic problem for all Memorex DVD Players
I assume you are running windows. Windows installs external devices automatically. You need to reset your USB devices. You need to
uninstall all your usb devices. Go to computer manager/device manager
and select all USB devices and unistall them. Go to the start menu,
click on run type compmgmt.msc. Find all your USB devices on the right
side. Follow the instructions for each device to uninstall them by
double clicking and then select uninstall. once you uninstall, click on
the icon to scan for hardware changes located on the sub menu. Your
operating system should recognize new hardware or reboot and the
operating system should install them automatically again.Do not connect the device until you are logged on completely, connect it and the operating system should recognize the new hardware and install it automatically. Try this, I
hope it helps.

If you need to re install windows 7, it is best to format the drive and start from scratch, if you need your files, first create a backup on an external drive , and moved your files including, documents and settings folder.
Hi, i will briefly explain you about cd/dvd reading problem .It can be create in desk top as well in laptop. It could be a problem with the lens, you should try cleaning the lens, and clean all the cable ribon, and also fit it tightly(it for only desk top ,if possible you can do in laptop) If you take a little risk but you can solve it self. follow the instruction: Don't panic its very simply.
clean the optical lance. Here the instruction for desktop dvd/cd
You need to have a software driver download for the Memorex DVD-RW and Lite-on CD ROM. You can have it from the Internet. Just type at the Search engine blank (Download for driver of Memorex DVD-RW). Upon reaching the site, Choose the one with Windows Vista OS. Then, thereafter you can get the download for Lite-on CD ROM. After having the download, go back to your PC menu and open the download to install it. Once installed, test it. And job well done.
NO PC stated dang. laptop or desk? internal DVD drive or external HP solds all 3. NO OS stated. windows? Windows what>????? no real DVD partnumber stated only the usless front bezel number 740. if yours is marked 2001,, its going to be a big problem. 9 years past HP support. and all old drive are weak now or scratched optics. and drives that old were even full of bugs then (we an link you to 10,000 pages showing that)
why not upgrade it.? get a new drive and new fresher OS. windows 10 and a nice new blu-ray burner. and move on. or if this rig (PC) is 2001 why not go to GOODWILL and buy a 2010 PC< for like $25 and i bet it works 10x better.
is this a dvd re-writer or a external floppy drive as advertised?
if its to copy dvds, install nero on the machine, then download a program called dvd shrink its free and can be found on google, put film in the drive, run dvd shrink, click backup, it rips it to c:\ then disc pops out and you put in blank dvd and :-) its done..
hope i have guessed what you mean correctly ..
All the best
