There can be two reasons.
1. you do not have the software installed on your PC which supports this file.
2. if you know what kind of file is it, the right click on file, select 'Open with' and then select the appropriate program(e.g. if its work file, select microsoft word) hope this helps you.

Damaged Word 2003 Document can't be opened

If it says that all you can do is to open it without formatting or graphic, that's all you'll get. Document is corrupt and you won't be able to open it Sorry if you needed to recover it.
Just as a remote possibility, if document as made by you, look at recovery folder
C:\Documents and Settings\"your login\Program Data\Microsoft\Word

How do I open an .xls file in 64-bit version of excel without it being in protected view?

I was like that when the problem exists when double-clicking in Windows Explorer. Then I get the message that the program isn't responding and have the option to close or wait. After a few moments Excel does eventually open and I can work on the file. I do not have the problem when I open the file directly form Excel.

How to recover a corrupt MS Project 2000 file

If you've literally overwritten the file with the same name, you probably have no hope of recovering it off the USB (see last suggestion though).

If you were working off the computer, MS Project always saves a .BAK file to the same location where the .MPP file resides, so you might find that. It could be hidden so you need to show hidden files in Windows to check.

If you were working off the USB, then you may find a .BAK file on there as well.

Another possibility is temp directories on the computer you were working on. Try typing into the search bar on the computer you were working yourfilename.*

Lastly, but a bit of a stretch, you could try downloading and running

Project Recovery Kit!/mpprecoverytool

on the USB key to see if by some chance it's got another deleted version named differently or a .BAK file perhaps to at least recover some of it. If you do find other versions of the file, DO NOT recover to your USB, recover to another drive from the USB.

How do i get into a spreadsheet when i get a message saying it can't be opened

Hi, what is the exact error code you receive? If you can provide the exact error code or message, will narrow down troubleshoot. To get around the problem, try starting Excel in safe mode. The command is "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\EXCEL.EXE /s".

To run the command:

1. Copy the above command without inverted commas.
2. Click Start and paste by pressing "Ctrl + V" and press the Enter key.

See if this open Excel. Thereafter, exit Excel and try opening Excel again in normal mode without the "/s" switch at the end.

If still having issue, suspect some of the system files may be corrupted. Run Office setup and hit Repair when prompted.

When I open my sony vegas 9 project, it begins to load, but when it reaches 17% a pop up comes on with the following messege: "An error occured while loading the project back to chernowitz.veg. The file...

The file is most likely corrupt. I would recommend trying to reinstall Sony Vegas Pro if the problem persists. If you are trying to open a file within Sony Vegas Pro then i would recommend searching or asking for ways to fix the corrupted file format, however their are plenty of good file fixers online.

My acomdata external is full.....and i can no longer access it....and it wants me to format it....

Do not format it yet.

With the external drive plugged in - go to Computer, and check the little box (or click the external drive icon) and right click on it (if you have to click it to highlight, after the dialogue box open, close it.

Right click on it (with it highlighted) and select Safely Remove

Once you get the message at the bottom right screen that it is safe to remove, pull it out and try using it in a different USB port.

If it still does this, try using it on another computer. If you still cannot access it, try running a defrag and disc cleanup on it, as well as having your anti-virus program scan through it.

I have had this happen once before and received a message as well saying I needed to format it. If I am remembering correclty, these are the steps I took to retrieve my files, and was successful.

If you are not successful in retrieving or accessing the files, you may need to format it - however, try one other alternative.

Try copying or burning the files to a cd/dvd or to your hard drive.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

How to download ms word on our computer i want to convert the word pad file to doc ms word....i dnt hv ms word downloaded on my pc

You must have a set of discs for MS Office.

Insert the first disc into your PC and after a short while a a message should appear showing what is on the disc.

One of the options should be "install" or "setup". Click on this and follow the instructions.

I haven't used word pad but you may be able export the file in s format that is suitable for word to import.

Some digging may be required. Find out what format word pad can export files (i.e. what the .AAA on the end of a file) and look at word, click on "file" and then "open" . Opposite the "filename" box is one that says "word" initially but is a drop down menu showing what types of files that can be read. If there is a format that word pad can output that ms word can read, hen you are in business.

Program won't open

I don't use that program but perhps I can easy your anxiety a little. You won't lose your brochure if you back it up. Without opening the programs you tried to open your brochure in simply go to the file itself that contains your brochure and copy it to a dvd or a portable media storage. Depending on the size of the file you may be able to zip it and email yourself a copy. Now that your work is safe and away from danger you can try to focus on what is freezing your computer. perhaps instead of trying to convert to PDF format you may try the print command. Instead of printing to your printer, select PDF as your printer. When I create a lengthy project, I always save a few copioes on my computer under different names so i have safety nets just in case I mess up. Good Luck

It sounds like your computer shut down while the file was open, and the software saved it by default. If this is what happened, then you would get the "text recovery" message when you opened the software again, after the computer re-booted. Have you tried opening the file using the link within the "text recovery" message?
