Storing CD-Rs in hot car

By pawa - usenet poster

I'm new to the CD-R format, so I'm looking for advice or experiences
from the rest of you folks. I have a few CD-Rs which I've been keeping
in my car, and here in Austin, Texas, summer is rapidly approaching.
I've heard that CD-Rs are more susceptible to heat & sun than
manufactured CDs, but is this really a problem in practice? Anyone
lost any CD-Rs to heat or sun?

I always keep my CDs & CD-Rs in the center console or the CD player,
so they are not exposed to direct sunlight, but even so the temp
inside my car probably gets to 130-140 degrees F on a hot summer day.
Any tips?

Never put labels on CDRs that you plan to use in your car. The heat
could cause the labels to become loose. If a label comes loose
inside the player it could cause substantial damage. Use marking
pens designed specifically for writing on CDs to mark them. Some
car decks will not read some CDRs.

One thing you might consider is using a thermally insulated container
for storing your CD-Rs. Here is one example:

It's best to park you car with the windshield facing North or to put a
cardboard sunshade in the window if you want to store them in the
front.

Keep them out of direct sunlight and make backups.

As long as you keep them out of direct sunlight you should be OK. I live in
central Florida and have yet to lose a CDR that was kept in the big wallet
under the seat. Even when the big wallet (Fellowes 100something cd storage
thingie) was inadvertently left on the car seat, the cd's inside where fine.
Although I wouldn't recommend making that a habit. Of course, the higher
quality your media, the better your chances.

Yeah, they are more susceptible to damage then manufactured CD's. Manufactured
CD's have actual pits under the polycarbonate, so the data on them cannot be
damaged by mild exposure to direct sunlight. Not true with CD-R media. The data
can be damaged by sunlight exposure as the dyes are sensitive to the UV
(ultra-violet) rays in sunlight. Extreme heat may also cause the dyes to
deteriorate.

The environmental factors that can cause damage should be listed on the liner
notes if you buy some CD-R's in jewel cases. The Verbatum disks in jewels have
the factors presented, at least.

Keep them out of direct sunlight. Not exactly sure if the temps you describe
will kill them, but you may try to get a CD wallet and take them out of the car
when you leave it parked. Get a big CD wallet to keep them in at home and a
small CD wallet to take a few with you in the car. Then carry this with you
(put it in a fanny pack maybe) when you exit your car.
