If you have another computer, you can remove your old HDD and "slave" it into another computer on the IDE channel and browse to your thesis, if you dont have another computer, you will need to find either a friend who does or take it to a shop to have the data retreieved

PLEASE HELP Find Expert to Recover Files From Western Digital MyBook Essential 2TB

First thing first - STOP using your WD drive immediately! If you continue using the disk drive, you significantly increase the risk that the files you want to recover will be lost forever due to overwritten. Every new file or action will take up more "free space" and reduce your chances of retrieving your deleted files from WD. So really, you need to act quickly. Then get a good HDD data recovery software to retrieve the data as most as possible.

How to Recover Deleted Files from Seagate Hard Drive in Windows XP?

Accidently delete important filesusing Shift+Delete keys in Windows XP? Can't get valued pictures back from therecycle bin after you emptied it? How to retrieve data from 'not recognized'hard drive and reconstruct inaccessible partition?

You'reLuck!Deleting or formatting won't make the data erased permanently.Thosedeleted data are still stored in the hard drive. They're just invisible orinaccessible.Only the FAT or NTFS table is erased (the information about wherethose data were saved), but the real data are still intact there in sectors ofthe hard drive.
So long as those deleted data are not overwritten by new data, it's highlypossible to recover them. The most effective way is to rely onsome data recovery program.

Tenorshare DataRecovery is a powerful data recovery program that can easily recover lost,damaged, formatted and accidently deleted data from your laptop or computerhard disk and all kinds of USB media drives.It can recover data afterdeeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data you accidentally deletedor formatted.
This program is equipped with four critical modules:"deleterecovery", "format recovery", "partition recovery" and"raw recovery". It can recover data after deeply scanning yourstorage device to look for lost data due to drives crash, virus corruptedpartitions, system sabotage, physical damage etc.
It supports for almost all Windows systems like Windows XP,Windows7,Vista,2000,2003,NT and common file systems (FAT12, FAT16,FAT32 and NTFS).You can get ithere: http://www.any-data-recovery.com/index.htm

It can RecoverLost Data Due to

Accidental deleting

» "Shift + Delete" without backup
» "Delete All" when deleting useless files
» Cut files instead of copying and pressing"Cancle" button
» Emptying Recycle Bin after delection
Formatting
» "Media/Drive is not formatted would you liketo format now?"
Virus infection/attack
Unexpected power off
Others
» Factory setting of device
»System reinstalling but want to retrieve the oldfiles
» Inaccessible partition or drive
» Dead hard drive
» Losing files during transferring files fromstorage device to PC/laptop
» Pulling out card while the camera is on
» Removing out storage devices not in "saferemove the drive"
» Turning off the camera during a write process

Then,howto retrieve deleted files?

Withinfour steps, you can get back your data:
1.Select deleted recovery. It will take you a few minutes to scan your storagedevice;
2. heck the deleted datayou want to recover;
3.Select a path folder for the recovered files;
4.Click "OK" to finish recovery.

Onemore tip:

If the hard drive can't be detected(means can't showup in 'My Computer' as a drive letter like C: drive),you can try this way.Putthe hard drive in a zip-lock bag and put it in the freezer for 2-3 hours. Thenwhile it's still cold plug it into the computer.If it fails, you will have to go to a recoveryoffice but let's hope not because it will cost you a lot of money and whetherthey can recover the data or not is not guarantee.

Hi there,your external hard disk may be infected by virus.Firstly,remove the virus with anti-virus software in your computer.Then you can recover your files from hard disk with third party data recovery software.I have succeed to recover files from hard disk with Tenorshare data recovery.It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard disk to look for lost data.
By the way,you can download a trial version and scan your hard disk for free to preview whether your files can be recovered. http://www.any-data-recovery.com/index.htm

Hi. My computer says I ejected my WD My Passport external drive but it was not properly ejected. How can I fix this. I need all my thesis files but computer can read the external drive! Help please!

Try to test your WD Ext HDD to a different computer and check if you will get the same problem.

If the same problem persist try to use a different cable for your WD Ext HDD.

If still fails kindly ask the store where you bought the WD Ext HDD on how to retrieve your files and have WD EXT HDD replaced?

If your WD Ext HDD works to a different computer then update the BIOS and Chipset of the computer where your WD Ext HDD connected previously.

Hope this helps.

As soon as the computer is turned on i get a black screen with an apology msg about not being able to start...it offers options for trying to start..including safe mode, safe mode with network, safe mode...

Hello

What these messages are actually telling you is that the computer can't see the hard drive. Now the real question is why? The best way to solve this would be take the hard drive out and slave to another system. This would tell you if the hard drive is actually spinning, and if all your data is retrieveable. If it can be seen in another system then my guess is that your drive has viruses corrupting the Windows startup files. If it can't be seen then the hard drive will have to go to a professional for data recovery.

Thanks

Laptop is dead; can I still retrieve data from hard drive?

You can remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter or an USB hard drive adapter case and connect it to a working computer's USB port. If this computer sees it as an external hard drive then you can copy your data off this hard drive. If it doesn't see the hard drive, then it is faulty. There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.
If the hard drive is OK you can put the hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an USB hard drive.
