I use an external cooler under the unit and it doesn't seem warm to speak of.

What model is your Toshiba?

Does it feel like it's getting hotter than it should?

Try reseatting the memory and test to see if that changes anything.

Usually this problem indicates an overheating issue, but since you're using a cooler and it doesn't feel warm then the issue points towards memory problems or more than likely a problem with the motherboard.

Try entering the bios and just let the computer sit to see how long it works before shutting down.

Toshiba A60 equiam will not boot from original recovery disk

Try reseating the RAM modules and then try the recovery CD.
If it still fails, take the RAM modules out and take them to your friendly computer repair shop and get them to test the RAM.

Will turn in but won't really start up, message pops up sayin I have problems on my laptop but it can't fix them? Read description

When your toshiba splash screen is showing on startup, press F8 continuously, then you should get some options, go to the one that says safe mode. After loading windows in safe mode click start, search, and type system restore. Open system restore, find a date where your pc was working correctly and click restore. If this doesn't do it on the toshiba spash screen (if you have a new enough laptop) there will be an option called system recovery usually f11 key, this will restore your pc back to its factory state and should resolve any problems your having. If you don't have that option go to https://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/serviceUnitVerification.jsp and see if you can order a set of recovery disc's for your model, they usually run from $25-$30. Hope this helps.

Won't start goes to XP window and shuts off then when you try to go to safe mode or start windows normally it also shuts down. Does the same if you try to go to last known good configuration

Sounds like a problem that I've had with a bad battery. I ended up taking the battery out and running straight from the adapter. It could also be a board short or virus. You might have luck, if you can get it to stay on long-enough, by hitting F2 at power-on and changing your boot order to the optical drive first and try booting from a recovery disk. I hope this helps.

Your are not "shutting down" the laptop. It is going into "Stand-by" mode.

#1:
When you want to shut down,
select [Start]
then select "Shut down" and not "Stand-by"

The power button will also work.
#2:
When you want to shut down,
Press the power button and nothing else.
The laptop will log you OFF and "shut down"

After replacing hard drive, computer wont stay on long enough to use recovery disk

You can not use a Dell cd, but if your XP license is on the bottom of the laptop, you can use a Win XP cd (borrow one from a freind) to reinstall the OS.
