3 beeps when press buttons on brother mfc 8440 turned printer off then on, sent fax to another machine...everything went find after that? what does the 3 beeps mean?

this stands for brother mfc-8440 as in the title.
you need to reset the "drum counter" of your printer..
to do so try one of those

Brother Laser Printers:

After replacing the drum unit, keep the front cover open (make sure the power is on). Press and hold the "GO" button until all four LED's are lit. Once the four LED's light up, close the front cover. Make sure the drum LED is off. The counter is reset!

Brother Fax Machines:

Open the front cover. Press the CLEAR/BACK button. Press 1, when the display shows accepted.

The faxes may need to be re-sent, faxes in memory are lost when the printer restarts.

This error means that there is a scanner motor error. Try and remove the error by following these steps: Press MENU *,2,8,6,4. The machine beeps for approximately 1 second and will display "MAINTENANCE" on the screen, indicating that it is placed in the initial stage of the maintenance mode, a mode in which the machine is ready to accept entry from the keys. Now you are inside the simulation, Press 01 to reset the error status. After that press 99 to exit the simulation.

- Pressing the 9 key twice in the initial stage of the maintenance mode makes the machine exit from the maintenance mode, restoring it to the standby state.
- Pressing the Stop button after entering only one digit restores the machine to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.

Could be a sensor in the ADF, or the hinge on the left rear of the scanner cover is broken.

Buy a double outlet RJ-11 adapter.

Set the one you use for sending only to MANUAL RECEIVE.

try unpluging the machine and the replug and let the machine reboot. brother tech

you need to buy the left cover hinge, how ever so that you can use the machine, by the cover there is a sensor button, tape it down and you can still use the adf

YOU HAVE TO RESET.
TURN OFF THEN PRESS THE STOP /CLEAR BUTTOM THEN TURN ON KEEP PRESS ABOUT 10 SECOND THEN IT WORK .

I recently had this problem - tested fuser and all sensors.
The fix is to reset the memory.
To do this, enter the Maintenance mode. Menu, * 2864
(enter the number quickly)
then type 01 ( zero one ), this will reset all memory including the user settings.
Finally type 99 to exit Maintenance mode.
The printer will restart and the error will be gone. Test out with copy and printer reports
