Re: Garmin 405 - cant unlock maps
Step 1: Get "garmin_keygen_v1.5.exe" 2008 by JetMouse Step 2: Follow the bottom instructions...
11) Go to "Utilities-Get Unit ID" and Find Device with your GPS plugged in USB. Write down Unit ID. 12) Run Garmin Unlock Utility, Enter that Unit ID at the top. 13) Select under "Select Map Product" 14) Enter the type of map you're using or if you have the Map ID enter in a custom map, use the Generate button to get 25char code. 15) In MapSource go to "Utilities-Manage Map Products" 16) Go to "Unlock Regions" Tab, and hit "Add...", enter 25char code, comment optional 17) Now on the main MapSource screen, type 'm' to enable map tool. 18) You should see a large white rectangle, with rectangle outlines (these represent NA maps) 19) Click and drag to select them all, you can click "Map Set Name" if wanted. 20) Click the "Send to Device" button. Wait an hour. Enjoy.

Create an account on Garmin's website and register the GPS using the serial number or plugging the GPS into the computer after downloading the Garmin communicator plugin. The Garmin communicator plugin is an application that allows the GPS to communicate with the Garmin website.
After the GPS is registered, there will be a tab for the "Dashboard" and with the GPS connected to the computer, the dashboard will detect the serial number of the GPS and let you know if there are any software or map updates available for it. The Garmin WebUpdater program can also be used for updating just the software (firmware) of the GPS and is a free download.
Installing the Garmin Communicator plugin should resolve the problem. In most cases, th USB drivers are included with the Communicator plugin that are required for the nuvi to be detected. If it is still undetected after the installation of the plugin, it may be necessary to download and install the latest USB drivers.
Download and install the Garmin commuicator plugin to your computer http://www8.garmin.com/products/communicator/ This will allow the nuvi to transfer data back and forth to Garmin's server. Connect your nuvi to your computer and run the Garmin WebUpdater to update the software on the nuvi. Download and Install WebUpdater. To update the mapping, you will need to purchase a map update subscription. https://my.garmin.com/maps/chooseDeviceType.htm? Once the subscription is activated and registered to the nuvi, follow the download instructions to download the map. This will usually take from 3 to 4 hours or more depending on your internet download speed. The nuvi 200 is a discontinued model and you may want to consider upgrading to a new GPS as a new nuvi with lifetime mapping can be purchased for about $150.00. http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-nuvi-1390-lmt.html
For further assistance you may want to contact Garmin support. http://www.garmin.com/us/support/contact
Go to garmins website www.garmin.com at the top of the page you will see MY GARMIN at the very top to the right. Click on that and a drop down will appear or it will take you directly to the sign up page. You will need to set up a new account with a user name and password. After that whatever you need to do you should be able to because you now set up an account with Garmin.
I hope this helps you out and if it does please leave me some feedback.
You can get map updates from Garmin website: https://my.garmin.com/maps/chooseDeviceType.htm? but will have to have installed Garmin Communicator Plugin before you can do that from the installation CD that came with the GPS device.
