When I put my drive into the USB device it is not recognized.

A pop up note says:
USB Device not recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it.

Is this drive you are atttaching with a USB cable? It could be a faulty cable, or if not, your flash disk may be corrupt

Hi, I try to plug my MP3 into one of my USB ports. Doesn't recognize it. 'Removable Disk (H:)' comes up in 'My Computer', but soon disappears.


There is a problem with your USB port
you should try getting them fixed which is a tough job, but you can try plugging your removable media into another USB port like USB ports in backside of the cabinet.
If you don't find any problem with your USB device then you must have been having problem with your Removable Media (Mp3)
If your MP3 Player is under warranty period then you can look for its repair (can be done if its out of warranty too, but it will charge you extra)

  • Unsecure or Loose Connection
    Unplug the presently connected USB device (if any). It is quite possible that the connection is not secure and has become loose. Re-plug the USB device tightly and firmly into the USB port. This is one of the most common reasons for an error in detecting a USB device.
  • Scan for Hardware Changes in Device Manager
    Use the Device Manager to scan for new and recently installed hardware. From the Start menu, select the Run option. In the pop up box, type in Devmgmt.msc and then click Ok. From the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes. This will make Windows scan & recognize any new devices that are installed. Now, close all opened device managers and control panels. Now, follow the above step and see if your computer detects the USB device.
  • USB Power Management
    Disable power management of the USB hub. To disable the power management on the USB hub, follow these steps; Click Start, and then click Run. Type devmgmt.msc in the popup box, and then click Ok. Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers' node, and then follow these steps for each USB Root Hub that is listed. 1. Right-click the USB Root Hub and then click Properties.
    2. Click the Power Management tab.
    3. Click to clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box, and then click Ok.
    Note: If you perform the following procedure on a laptop computer, you may reduce the battery life.
Sometimes, simply unplugging the USB device and turning off the computer for twenty minutes and then restarting may solve the issue. If none of the above options have solved the problem, check the manufacturer's website for new driver information. It is possible that your drivers need to be updated. There could also be a possibility of hardware failure, which needs to be checked by a hardware expert

Gateway 310 s won't recognize a cd

Method 1: Initiate recognition of the USB device by using Device Manager loadTOCNode(2, 'workaround'); To initiate recognition of the USB device by using Device Manager, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type Devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. The Device Manager window opens.
2. Click to select your computer as the location for the scan.
3. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes.

Windows XP recognizes the new device.
4. Close the Device Manager window.

If this method resolves the issue, you are finished.

If this method does not resolve the issue, go to method 2.
Method 2: Disable power management of the USB hub loadTOCNode(2, 'workaround'); Note If you perform the following procedure, you may also reduce the battery life on a portable computer.

Use this method if method 1 does not work. To disable power management of the USB hub, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type Devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. The Device Manager window opens.
2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
3. Right-click a USB Root Hub in the list, and then click Properties. The USB Root Hub Properties dialog box is displayed.
4. Click the Power Management tab.
5. Click to clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box, and then click OK.
6. Repeat steps 3 through 6 for each USB Root Hub in the list.
7. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes.

Windows XP recognizes the new device.
8. Close the Device Manager window.

If this method does not resolve the issue, go to method 3.

Click Start, click Run, type Devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. The Device Manager window opens.
Uninstall all the usb controller from USB controller
and now restart the computer.

If this method does not resolve the issue, go to method 4 .
Method 3: Restart the computer loadTOCNode(2, 'workaround'); To initiate recognition of the USB device, first unplug the USB device and restart the computer. Then, wait five to ten seconds before you plug the USB device into the computer or hub. Windows XP recognizes the new device.

My computer has stopped recognising the driver for a 500gb Lacie Premier Multimedia Hard disk. It appears as 'Unknown device". how do i locate and replace the driver.


Most USB accessories do not get recognized well when plugged in before startin the computer. The exception seems to be mice. USB hadr drives and flash drives specially seem to have this problem. I always use the disconnect icon in the system tray to disconnect before shutdown and plug them in after windows has stabilized. I even gets worse if you use a USB hub. Some devices will not be recognized when attached to a hub.

My 160GB Crossfire is not recognised when connected to any of the USB ports. It used to be, but then I've had some other PC issues recently that meant a forced closure of the PC and I'm concerned that...


When starting the external drive there is not much more than just plugging it in to a USB port and turning it on. The computer should recognize it ( showing something like the window shown here http://attachments.techguy.org/attachments/66120d1129787805/new-device-found2.jpg ) and it will show up in the My Computer area and a green arrow looking icon ( http://home.krb.nsw.edu.au/start/images/USB2.jpg ) When disconnecting an external drive the correct procedure is to left click the arrow in the system tray and select Safely Remove Mass Storage Device (X:) (whatever letter you device shows here)
You may want to test if another computer recognizes the device being plugged in to see if it is still functioning. You may want to also try plugging the device into a different USB port on your computer.

One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfuctioned adn windows does not recognize it


Check out the Device manager: for which USB device its showing error, it will be flagged or question marked.

If you have all the devices attached to PC installed properly then this error will not come again.

Remove all the devices to check it out and let me know. So I can investigate further.

Ok, try the device in another computer, if the same error comes up in another computer or more, you most likely have a faulty usb device or a loose connection. is this a usb memory or?

Try to plug in the usb device in the pport which is at the back of your system. This should work. If not then revert back.

I plugged my Memorex TravelDrive into my computer. It has always worked perfectly. This time I got the message that the USB device was not recognized and I can't get into my files.

When you plug a USB device into a Windows XP-based computer immediately after the computer comes out of standby (S3) or hibernate (S4), the computer may not recognize the USB device. When this issue occurs, the USB device may be listed in Device Manager as an unknown device, and you may receive the following warning message:
Unrecognized device has been found.

This issue occurs because, when the computer comes out of S3 or S4, there is a five- to ten-second period when the selective suspend feature of the USB driver will interfere with detection of a new USB device connection. The time period depends on several factors. This includes the following factors:• Host controller hardware
• Attached hubs
• Attached devices
• USB driver versions
• Support for USB 2.0
• Additional system hardware or configurations that may change the timing
There may be other reasons that a USB device is not detected

Method 1
loadTOCNode(2, 'workaround'); After the computer comes out of S3 or S4, wait five to ten seconds before you plug the USB device into the computer or hub.

Method 2
After the computer comes out of S3 or S4, unplug the USB device, and then plug the device back into the computer or hub.

Method 3
Use the Device Manager to scan for new hardware. Follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type Devmgmt.msc, and then click OK..
2. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes. This causes Windows to recognize new devices.
3. Close Device Manager and Control Panel.

Method 4
Disable power management of the USB hub.
Note If you perform the following procedure, you may also reduce the battery life on a portable computer.
To disable power management on the USB hub, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK.

Try restarting the computer with the device in. Sometimes if you clear the memory that might help (stating the machine without memory then put it back and start it again).
