Question about Brother HL 1440 Laser Printer
Most likely cause is a driver setting NOT a printer setting, especially if it's 1 used on a networked printer.
You list the paper size in tray as lettre (so I assume you are in USA)
make sure the printer driver is set to match this size, and that the document size in word is set to this also.
I can't recall if it's letter or A4 is slightly longer, but if either way 1 is slightly longer and narrower than the other. So if printer and driver are not set to match it could be throwing line feeds in odd places.
Try a print from a different application, for example, does a windows test page throw a spare page afterwards ? If you print 2 pages worth of raw text from Notepad does it throw extra pages. If yes, then remove printer driver and reload it CHECKING all the settings, if they previously looked OK, if you found a setting in driver looked wrong, try that first.
If it still does it, try installing driver on a different PC (laptop?) and test from there, if it still does it contact local HP support team, if it doesn't then look into software setup on the "problem" machine.
having spent 5 yrs fixing printers I can assure you most problems of this nature are simply a driver setting, or a printer option setting, or can even be the paper tray guides not set right, so middetecting paper sizes.

I was able to fix it by taking off the top of the printer. This involved taking off 4 screws on the top of the printer. I then had to disconnect the wires going to the control panel by unhooking them from the right side. I then located a thin rectangular box which I'm assuming houses the laser. I removed this with 4 more screws and turned it over. There was a little metal flap that I moved back and below was the mirror the lasers shoot on before going onto the toner.
In the same spot where I was having fading, I noticed a lot of toner on the mirror, so I cleaned it of, put it back together, and the fading was gone.
This was after I tried a new toner and maintenance kit.
Hope this helps

it may have had a dirt inside that may have been causing the lines. try cleaning with a soft dry cloth then try to print. reseat first the toner before you clean or wipe with a soft cloth

Try cleaning the charge wire. Move the lime green plastic handle from one side of the image unit to the other in the groove. If this doesn't work you'll need a new image unit.$$$$$. note: Make sure green handle is moved completely to the right when finished or black line will occur.
