Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Periodically cycles through a loud humming noise.

Cooler runs quiet 95% of the time but every few days it sounds like the motor shifts to another level and will make a loud humming noise for 5-10 minutes. It abruptly starts and then abruptly quits but is so loud it can startle you.

We are experiencing the same symptoms with our LG (2 year old)french door bottom freezer. It began with a dropping sound and a loud bang, then an incredibly loud humming or whirring sound. It quiets down a bit but the humming always seems to be present. From reading posts it may be ice build-up around the fan. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi, these are the early signs of compressor failure. i would put in a service call before it completely fails.

I would focus on the actual motor as the focal point for repair.

I just bought a new frigidaire refrigerator. I plugged it in and it began to emit a large loud humming noise. It almost sounds like something is vibrating inside. Is this normal for a branc new fridge?...

Hi,
It depends....it may be loud for a hour or so, but should quiet down as it cools...
There is an explanation for this, but it is very long and would involve intricate details about refrigeration systems...

If it does not quiet down after a 1/2 day then call the place where you got it and return it...

Avanti Beverage Cooler BCA5105SG running very loud.

Inside the cooler is the evaporator fan usually right in the middle behind a cover. As it slows down you have less circulation and ice forms quicker and cooling is diminished. Sounds like it is going out.

AMANA REFRIGERATOR MAKES A LOUD POP!

Dear Customer

Please perform the following

If it's cooling ok, they're probably normal sounds. Modern refrigerators can make many noises, most people aren't home long enough to hear them. A popping sound could be defrost water hitting a hot defrost element, or refrigerant making noise in the cooling lines. If it's working ok, ignore it. Please rate this,Thank u

or there is dust clogging around the pump or fan is not running.
remove the bottom or back and look around the compressor.

Loud humming noise as fridge is running

Sounds like the freezer fan is rubbing some wires or possible some foam insulation around the fan. I would look into the freezer compartment fan and go from there. The fan Will Shut off when you open the doors. Let me know how you make out and if you need anymore help.

Thanks,
Bill

Loud humming noise as fridge is running

Hey everyone-

I recently fixed a similar problem with my freezer. I searched first and found this and a few other sites which listed this and wanted to provide input for anyone in the future.

I have a GE GSH25JSRF SS. It is about 3 years old. Several months ago I noticed when the evaporator fan in the back of the freezer turned on it would make an awful howling or whistling sound. Basically sounded like what you would hear from the window of an older house if the wind outside was blowing real strong. It was loud enough to hear on the other end of the house.

I was convinced that it HAD to be the air blowing over the venting or a gap that created that sound. But I read different solutions on the internet and decided to take a chance on simply replacing the evaporator motor and attached fan blade. That solution worked and my house is quiet again, thank god.

I ordered the parts from a supplier on the internet. Keep in mind, though, if you're not real handy it may be more than you bargain for. Might be easier to have a service guy come out.

I'm still not sure exactly what aspect of these parts caused the howling sound. It could be a bearing within the motor or perhaps the fan blade slipping due to wear. Either way, it's fixed now. Just wanted to share. Thanks.
