Question about Mtd Garden
I put new belts on my mtd riding 38 inch cut with a briggs 12.5 motor and if I go up a hill it just comes to a stop and the belts stop turning as well as the pulleys. I can see this as the shifter cover is off and I have to depress the clutch and release it again and it takes of but instantly go very slow. I have adjusted the threaded rod nut that goes to the speed shifter but it still goes real slow. It was going slow before I changed the belts but I was hoping this was what the problem was. It runs great and mows great it is just very slow and takes a long time to mow.I checked the pulleys when I had the belts off and they spin freely. It goes slow with or with out the blades engaged. It used to go real fast and then started slowing down and if I push and release the clutch It would pick up a little and start going slower again. Please help me thank you.
There is a variable speed pulley that is a double pulley....one belt from engine to pulley and one from pulley to transaxle....remove both belts...pushing in the clutch will help with removal....remove o ring on top of pulley and pull up......the middle piece of metal is stuck....this piece is meant to slide up and down.....put the middle piece of metal on your pulley in your vice...wd40 the hell out of the shaft on pulley .....grasp the top with one hand and the bottom with your other hand...work the stuck pulley free.....put lithium grease on shaft...reinstall....done

SOURCE: launch on take off
I have the same problem sometimes, but it is only when I let the brake / clutch out fast. When you go to let the clutch off, and you are in gear. Try easing off on throttle, you can increase the throttle after the clutch is out. THis should help with you sore neck. Another thing you may want to try is adjusting the throttle calbe. It should show or tell you in the manual how to do this,

When you replaced the belt you either got a shorter belt or you have rerouted the belt wrong. You might try and get an original; belt and replace the one on the tractor. Good Luck-David
