I've taken a Fujifilm to 34 metres no problems (didn't take any
pictures - just did it because I wanted to)

I'll second that! I have taken the camera to 30m and its fine. You
cant tend to press the shutter release after 20m or so but it has
never yet flooded. Pictures are not brilliant I must admit but as I
only want them for me and to show my family it does the trick! While on
holiday I rented a proper camera and the results were clearer with not
as much blue haziness but apart from that there was not much
difference!

Obviously they don't work _well_ at 25m, they don't even had a flash,
but you can get moderately interesting pictures out of them, see

depending on the visibility and the ambient light. At 10 or 15m you
normally still have decent colour, it gets washed out below that
though...

I have used Fujis because the Fuji 800 ASA is a very good film.
Also, its housing seems also quite good. Some people have taken it
significantly deeper than its rated 5 meter limit and the shutter
doesn't stop working (I am told that in some disposables the shutter
button is blocked by the pressure).
Of course there is no guarantee that the camera will survive deep dives,
but IIRC, I took them to about 10 meters without a problem. Somebody I
know managed to implode one but that happened quite deep (18 meters,
30 meters ? I no longer remember).
You might also want to take a look at the Vivitar Cruise Craser Mariner
some links here:

I think it is already discontinued but it seems that you can still
find it, and it costs about the same as 3 or 4 disposables (??17.99
at 7dayshop plus ??6.99 for the close up lens).

I found the Vivitar Cruise camera to be an absolute bargain (??17)
some say that it'll survive down to 40 metres without flooding but its
official rating is down to 15 metres.
try # and type cruise into the search box...

They are all pretty much the same, but the Fuji is rated deeper than
most at 3 or 4m
Having said that if its your first sea dive I would leave the camera
behind and concentrate on the job in hand. Wait until diving is second
nature before you add the extra complication of a camera, its far too
easy to worry about the camera and not concentrate on your air, depth,
deco, buddy etc
