My toast lever wont stay down-I've loosened the cover and cleaned as best I can. How can I take the lever off so that I can fully remove the cover? It is a Cuisinart two slice black toaster.

On most appliances the knob on the lever pulls off and the cover is then lifted off the lever. Check that the bi-metal strip that latches the toast ejector has not been bent or damaged. Once you have the cover you will be able ot see the whole mechanism.

Toaster won't stay in down position in order to toast - Cuisinart CPT-160 - although it will toast if I hold the lever down as it toasts

We opened up our toaster and scraped some baked-on crumbs off the top of the electromagnet that controls the carriage catch. When we closed it back up, it worked again.

Toast wont stay down in toaster it wont lock in place

I'm at the same crossroad. Thry holding down the lever for more than 4-secs. The light will blink once, then it is as though the circuit is over-ridden and a toasting cycle will begin. This might help to eliminate wether you have a mechanical or electrical issue. Mine appears to be electrical. I'm now investigating if it is the timing or relay?

Lever on taoster will not stay down

I would just buy a new toaster...they are not that expensive. Check the intruction book first because maybe it's under warranty. Or if you bought it very recently, just take it back to the store. Most places will take it back even without a reciept if you tell them you just bought it and it's already broken.

Left side dont work

The holder is a bimetallic strip that heats up and opens when it reaches a preset temperature based on the darkness setting. It should latch onto the toast loading mechanism when cold and then snap open when it reaches a certain temperature. The darkness setting knob adjusts the point at which it opens. Probably either the release mechanism is broken or bent or the setting knob is broken. You can disassemble it when unplugged by removing the screws on the bottom and prying off the toast loading knobs by placing a ruler wrapped in cloth against the housing and prying the knobs off with a large screwdriver carefully going back and forth from side to side. If the knobs break or won't go back on use a high temperature epoxy to reassemble. You have a good side to compare the bad side to. Look for differences from one side to the other as the toast loader lever goes down and as the darkness knob is rotated. You may just have something blocking the mechanism. After working on it, plug it in outside to a ground-fault protected outlet on a fireproof surface before attempting to use it.

When i push the lever down to make toast, it does not stay

This is a problem, our old toaster had this problem, and it would only work if we jammed the handle down, but don't try this, only because ours broke after we tried this, but if you can send it to the manufacturure, they should be able to fix this. If you don't what to do this, please phone me at 505 9181, but please call me from 8:00-10:00, 2:30-8:00.

Toaster lever wont stay down

Open the toaster up and look inside by the levers, there should be a little piece that will keep the lever down, if this is missing, then you may need to replace the toaster, if not, then the little piece may be stuck, you can use the following to try and loosen it up,
1. WD-40

My toaster doesn't stay in the down (toast) position unless I hold it down

I solved this problem on my Cuisinart CPT-90 Classic Style Toaster twice for two different problems. Of course: make sure it's UNPLUGGED while working on it and WATCH IT several times when testing so you can unplug it first and then extinguish it if it catches on fire.

1st time: There is a small solenoid mounted in the center of the circuit board. When the pop up mechanism is pressed down the circuit energizes and the the solenoid magnetically locks a plastic clip that holds the spring loaded pop up mechanism down until it's done toasting. The plastic mounts for the circuit board broke or weakened until the whole circuit board would tilt up and the solenoid clip would slip under the spring tension. I used a plastic tie-wrap to hold the circuit board firmly in place and that worked to this day.

2nd time : The four copper reed tabs can be miss aligned. If they
do not make contact, the circuit will not energize the solenoid.
The reason they warped was that, over time, the contacts build up carbon and have more resistance. Resistance equals heat. The
plastic base of the copper reed switch melted and misaligned the reeds. The second time I cleaned the reeds and bent them back into position, The third time the the plastic was to badly burned to be reliable. If I had cleaned the contacts once a year, it probably would still work now. I haven't found a place to buy a replacement reed switch so my toaster is toast. If anyone knows where to order them, I'd like to know. If the white plastic base of the reed switch is not melted, then they can be cleaned and aligned.

Note: When aligning the copper contacts, don't just hold down the pop up mechanism. The pop up mechanism will push lower than the position for toasting. Push it down and then hold the solenoid clip instead. Then the two center reeds will be at the correct spread.
