Question about Whirlpool GHW9400 Front Load Washer

Whirlpool Duet Washer drum disconnected

A friend of mine moved her Whirlpool Duet Washer GHW9400PW2 without the shipping brackets. The tub came disconnected from the top springs and 2 of the bottom struts. How do I get the drum reattached to the springs? It is HEAVY. If I lay it forward on the door will It be repositioned correctly? Can I put the struts back together or do I need to get new ones? Thank you

It appears your vibration damper has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question.

The drum seems to have become detached from the inside and has been scrapping against some plastic

The support bracket on your inner tub has probably broken. It involves replacement of the inner tub (drum) and probably the outer tub depending on the extent of the scraping. The parts will have a 5 year warranty, but the labor/service charge is your responsibility. Labor can be a bit pricey because of the extensive labor involved.

Moving across country. Want to know how to safely move my whirlpool duet washer. Have original huge screws. What to do with them?

The large screws you mention are called shipping (or transport) bolts. They need to be installed prior to moving the washer to prevent damage to the drum, drum supports or counter-weights. They are inserted in the back of the washer. There are some small white plastic transport covers that you will need to remove to see where the screws insert. You can view an exploded view diagram of your washer at pcappliancerepair.com. The transport covers that I am describing are listed as item 26 under the "Top and Cabinet Parts" section.

In addition, its a good idea to remove any residual water from the wash tub and drain lines. If you own a wet/dry shop vac, an easy way to accomplish this task is to remove the drain line from the stand pipe at the wall and pull a vacuum on the line. This will pull any water that remains in the washer. This water can become stagnant if the washer remains closed up for any significant period of time. If you do not own a shop vac, an alternate method is to remove the clean out trap on the drain pump. Be prepared to place some towels down around the pump to catch any water. To access the drain pump, remove the toe panel directly below the washer door. This is done by removing the screws under the bottom front edge. With the screws removed, the panel will drop down, then come off.

NOTE: For better access to the panel screws, you can prop up the two front feet of the washer (a 2x4 works well for this).

The drain hose normally has a plastic saddle bracket that helps the hose keep its shape. On that bracket is a screw hole. Remove one of the top panel screws in the rear of the washer and reinstall with the drain hose bracket attached. This will enable you to ship the washer with the drain hose affixed to the back of the unit and not dangling.

When removing the fill hoses, leave them attached to the washer and tape them to the back panel of the washer. Or, remove them and place them inside the wash tub for safe keeping.

I hope I've given you enough information to assist you with your move. If you have any further questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Cannot remove CCU

1. UNPLUG the washer.
2. Remove the washer top panel by removing the three screws that hold the panel in place in the rear of the washer. With the screws removed, the panel will slide back, then off.
3. The CCU is located directly behind the wash tub.
4. With the new CCU in hand, carefully disconnect each connector from the old CCU and swap them one at a time with the new CCU. (This is the easiest method I know of to do this. This will avoid the possibility of getting any connectors crossed).
5. Once you have all the connectors moved to the new CCU, use a screwdriver to lift up on the release tabs that hold the old CCU to the mounting bracket and remove.
6. Now carefully insert the new CCU with all the connectors in place on the mounting bracket and snap into place.

Another method is to use a digital camera to take photos, or use the tech sheet that is located inside the washer (behind the lower panel under the door). The tech sheet should have an illustration showing all the connector locations.

Duet washer very loud when spinning

No you do not have problems with your bearings (especially if you can rotate the basket and it rotates nice and smooth).

What has happened to your machine is exactly what happened to mine: One of the three 'legs' on the shaft support attached to the rear or the basket has broken. The reason it broke is because the bracket is made of die-cast aluminum alloy that is being attacked by galvanic corrosion. See attached pictures of the corroded shaft support, including a close-up of the break. This is what you will find when your machine is taken apart.

You can verify this failure mode by slowly rotating the basket and observing the position of the basket at its maximum off-center location. While the basket is at this position look at the back of the basket and you should see one of the three 'indents' located at the 12 o'clock position. While at this position you should be able to move the basket up and down. Now rotate the basket 120 deg so that the next 'indent' is positioned at the 12 o'clock position. The basket will now be more centered in the opening, and you will not be able to move the basket up and down. You have just identified which of the three bracket arms have been broken.

Call Whirlpool warranty service (1-800-253-1301) and tell them about the problem with the basket: believe it or not the basket has a life-time warranty. The shaft support is not available as a seperate item. The basket p/n is 8182232.

I was able to get Whirlpool to send me a replacement basket, but they would not do the same for the front-half of the plastic tub, which was damaged by the basket hitting the front lip, even though the warranty states that the plastic tub is warranteed for ten years. They did however agree to sell me one for 50% off the std cost. The p/n is 285982.

If your washer was purchased less than 5 years ago, best to work with your local Whirlpool authorized service agent to get the machine repaired. My machine is over 5 years old (GHW9100LW1), and I am repairing the machine myself.

I would be interested in hearing how you make out in getting your washer repaired.

Regards,
Bill in Ma.

Whirlpool Duet: gray plastic agitator poece inside drum broke off

here's the part number for the replacement 8182233, thinking it may come as a 3 pack , if they're not broken no need to replace. but the new one will simply slide in and with a click forward lock into place. they also come shipped with a screw to secure. in order to install screw you'll need to remove the top of the washer(3 screws across the back of the top assy and slides back and off. then you'll see the top of the tub area, a small black hose will run from the white box to the left to directly top of the tub assy. remove ethe hose from the tub and spin the inner drum to the correct position, they screw hole will line up through the opening, re-secure the hose to the tub and your in!

Make a boil wash (with no clothes and detergents) put in the powder's drawer a cup of bicarbonate of soda. It should clean the machine and move out the bad smell. Good luck!
