Hi, I did not set the password for the bios,

The old HDD was preventing POST. so another HDD solved that.

So no information in partition D: which would be on the old HDD. So Recovery media that comes with it is useless. I looked for this on and off for a while (recovery media in it's entirety) no joy.

So now months of dust build up later, the spark awoke me - to install windows, but been stopped at the first hurdle being entering the bios to set boot from dvd drive etc.

When I can face it I will start to dismantle to clear the CMOS

  • Did You set a bios password? If You did, the password is whatever You have set. If not, contact Your vendor for a password.

P.S. Bios is not dependent on the hard disk drive.

Even if your bio is locked theres usually a key that allows you to enter boot menu you don't need bios code to get in there try F2 or F12

First boot of Win 7. New PC build

First of all when you are in the BIOS and have set the DVD/CD drive as the first boot device make sure you save the settings before you restart the computer as it will not remember the changes if you don't.

Make sure that the lens on the CD/DVD drive is clean and also make sure the Windows 7 install disk is clean and free of any finger prints.

make sure that you keep tapping a key when the drive spins up as sometimes people miss the "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD" message.

If you still can't get the disk to boot then try the install disk in a working PC and see if that reads the disk. If it does then the optical drive could be faulty or does not support DVD format.

Loading a new windows operating system but the computer is locked by a password

It could be that the BIOS is set to boot straight from the HDD. You can either go into the BIOS and change the setting or you could press 'F8' in the early stages of boot up and the computer should give you the option to boot from DVD. Make sure that the CD/DVD drive can read the disc as if the drive is a CD drive it woun'd read a DVD disc, if it's a DVD drive you're OK.

Can't boot the recovery disk

To boot from the disc you have to make sure you have the bios set to read the cd/dvd rom drive first. To get into bios, or "setup" you have to hit the button it tells you as the machine boots usually at the splash logo for the manufacturer. Dell is F2, others are Del or F1. Then set the boot options to cd rom (or dvd) first before the Hard drive. Then insert the recovery disk and reboot the pc after saving the changes in your bios.

I forgot my computer password

Is this BIOS password or Windows Password?

BIOS Password can be cleared by CMOS reset, but you would have to crack it open to get to CMOS battery.

Top 3 methods to crack bios password!

Windows Password can be force changed with a bootable USB thumb drive with a Windows Password Recovery Tool using a Linux Distro. I am guessing you dont have a CD or DVD drive, so you will have to create a bootable USB drive with the password reset tool. OR reinstall Windows via External CD or DVD Drive and software or create a bootable thumb drive of say 8GB in size with the OEM disk copied to that drive if it allows with piracy protection maybe not allowing OEM CD or DVD to be copied to another drive.

Insert your Recovery disc into the CD/DVD Rom and reboot your computer. Just follow the installation wizard to install your system back to default/original settings. All of your data will be lost.

When you use the Recovery disc all the setings will be reverted back to the original settings. Back up or save your data before you use the Recovery disc.

I cant get past the BIOS password

Normally you just hit enter and it will boot up, if not then you need to remove the biso battery for 30 seconds with the power unplugged to clear memory and you should be able to log in, Be sure to set a password before you log in or go online or use a USB pen drive on it.

I am presently using i want to install windows 7 is it possible, they cannot taken any booting from the cd,by default grub installer is loading

Hi Thanks for your question
In order to boot from the CD drive you must change the Boot Order in BIOS.
In order access BIOS you must press certain key on the keyboard during start up. Depending on the machine it may be F1, F2, F3, F10 or Delete key. Once you acces BIOS you must find Boot order settings. Again depending on machine this may look different, but most of the time it's a separate Tab or settings may be in general part in BIOS setup. When you find it you have to place CD/DVD drive on the top of the list of Boot Order and before exiting BIOS sace changes. Now your machine should Boot up form CD and you should be able to install Windows 7. Do not hesitate to ask more questions if further assistance is needed. Good Luck
