This is a new machine I got for Christmas. All of the dirt is staying in the area where the brushes are and then falls out when you turn off the machine. I have checked all connections and the hoses seem...

If you checked all possible intake and outlets for obstruction, the problem is in the power motor. You are not getting rotation and suction, therefore although the intake brush collects dirt, there is no suction drawing the particles up into the tank. That is a serious condition for a new unit. Needs factory service.

It was making a funny noise, then a burning smell, and smoke coming from under the cylinder which collects the dirt, then switched itself off. I have checked for blockages and can't see any

your motor is burned up. stop using the vacuum immediately due to possibility of fire. this is usually caused by the inner seal on the bottom of the cyclone lifts up or gets pinched and doesnt seal with the bottom lid.

Dirt does not collect in container....collects in filter area

Small Filter at bottom of cannister may be clogged. Not letting enough suction draw dirt down.

Dirt smell

This is a pretty common thing on vacuum cleaners designed like the Oreck. If it is huge bunnies of dust, well then that means there is a leak somewhere...
