SOURCE: DLINK SWITCH DES-1008D

It sound like your network is setup as follows;
Modem -> Switch -> pc's

Most ISP's will only lease you a single IP your network should look more like this;
Modem -> routing device -> pc's

Where routing device is an actual router or firewall that leases private addresses to your pc's and routes outbound traffic to the public address your ISP has leased you.

Do you have more than one computer plugged into this switch? Do none of them work?

SOURCE: what is the default IP

Hi,

This issue is more on a hardware. 169.254.XXX.XXX refers to an INVALID IP ADDRESS. Here's what you can try:
>release the ip address by running command prompt:
>>>>Click START>type CMD on the search bar>type IPCONFIG /RELEASE and hit ENTER
>>>>ip address will be set to 0.0.0.0
>renew the ip address: by typing IPCONFIG /RENEW and hit ENTER
>>>>it will generate new sets of ip addresses

However, if it still gives you 169.254.XXX.XXX you need to flush the DNS by typing IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS and hit ENTER and it will immediately tell you that the DNS had been successfully flushed.
>Check your ip address by typing IPCONFIG and hit ENTER

That's the best I could do for the issue that you have.Thank you for choosing FixYa! Your rating will help me succeed and continuously help a lot people.

D-Link DES-1008D 8-Port drivers

Drivers are not required, the device is a networking device and doesn't interact with the OS directly anyway.
What you might be looking for is the Web Interface that allows you to change settings, update firmware etc.
By default most are configured to either 19.168.0.1 / 10.0.0.1 / 10.1.1.1
Open your web browser, type one of those into the web address bar until you find the one that brings up the web page, from here you should be able to configure a few things.
If you are unsure click start > run > type: cmd > hit enter> a dos prompt appears, now type: tracert www.google.com
You will see IP addresses appear as the computer traces the path the packets are taking to reach google, what you are interested in is the first address that is in that list, that should be your switch ip address and all you have to do now, is type that address in your browser address bar. This should now bring up the configuration page for the switch.

Still unsure of the address, head to D-links website and find the support link and search for your model of switch, from here you can bring up the detailed users guide which will contain instructions on how to access the Web interface also.

Setting up a small network using DSL and a DLink router

1.) The setup needs changing
2.) first off the dss-24 is a network switch not a router
3.) all of your pc equipment should be pluged into that device.
4.) chose one port as an uplink to your att modem
I think your problem is that the new modem is only giving out one ip address. So what ever first pc is turned on that is the one that grabs the address.
5.) you will most likly need a router to take the one ip address assigned via att then dole out additional ones. Remember the dss-24 is not a router. It simply connects everyone together. Each device still needs an ip address given from somewhere. Your old cable modem probibly did that but your new att dsl most likly does not.hence the new router will do that.....
to set it up do the following
2.) Find out the ip setup needed for your dsl service
A.) gateway ip
B.) primary & secondary dns server ip`s
C.) subnet mask
3.) get into the setup of your new router and then plugg in
all of these values using a fixed if address in the router
4.) connect routers wan port to one of the modems port. u may have to use a cross cable or straight look at the link lites to find out if they are talking to each other
5.) make sure that the routers lan side is setup for DHCP
6.) connect one lan port off the router to an uplink
of the dss-24. Then reboot everything
7.) viola it should all work internet on evey machine and file sharring.
