Hi All,
I bought a new compaq presario 900 series (910US, I think) a few weeks
ago. After finding out that, ekkkk _it came with windows_ (surprise,
surprise...), I attempted to do a clean install of RedHat 8.0.
Anyway, straight to the point, after booting from the CD (and this is
the weird part,) I find that the installer program (after doing the
language, keyboard; you know, that old chestnut) is unable to mount
the CD drive (a combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM). I am wondering, may be it is a
driver issue? I have tried using every disk image under the /images
subdirectory off of the first install CD, but to no adieu. If anyone
has a system like mine, and was successful installing linux ( any
distro, willing to do a few downloads if that is necessary), I could
really use some assistance.
Sys specs:
Athlon XP 1500+
30GB HD (IDE)
32X combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM
256M mem
Thanks a bunch!

I managed to install rh 8.0 on a presario 900 by booting on a "linux
on a floppy" distrib. Mine was tomsbrt (or something like that).
Once booted, create a new ext2 partition (at least 3 cds have to be
copied on it) using fdisk and mkfs.ext2. Then copy your 3 rh cds on
the new partition :
cat /dev/hdc
Yes, the cdrom drive works with tomsbrt !
This will create the 3 cd isos on the partition. Be aware, the
filenames have to be exactly the same as the files you downloaded from
the net. (Can't remember, I made this a few weeks ago).
Then you may be able to boot on your rh cd1 and choose install from
hard drive. Just select your partition and the installer automatically
finds the 3 isos (from their names).

ps: I had to add the "nomce" option on the boot command line (boot
from the cd). The boot process hangs (chipset issue?) if you don't
specify this option.
ps2: The cdrom drive doesn't work after installation (even with a
fresh 2.4.19 ) I didn't work on this since a few weeks, don't
hesitate to mail your ideas ;-)

controller chipset of the Presario 900) and linux. I'm not sure how that
affects other distros but the problem you are describing is excatly like my
900 installing RH8.0. I have tried startup options at the boot: prompt such
as:
linux pci=biosirq
linux nodma
linux hdc=cdrom
and others like that with no avail...I am still searching because I believe
there is a work around but so far no go. Let me know if you find something
out.

The trouble is that (AFAIK) both of us are trying to install from
CD's. Therfore we haven't got a working system to tinker with! I've
tried a Google search on linux, 4240N (the make of DVD/CDRW) and
theres not an awful lot of interest. The only interesting bit is from
a website of region hackers that are having problems with the 4240N
and thier new firmware, s'pose it may be linked, a new way of
enforcing region coding that breaks linux?

Compare "etc/modules.conf" of the different distro.
A search on Google on "combo CD Linux" returns 9.000.

8.0 & 8.1. It appears to lock up the CD in such a way as the installer
cannot mount it to continue after the initial hardware scan. I have
tried passing commands to LILO (not sure which loader RH uses) such as
NOPCMCIA=yes, hdc=ide-scsi, but to no avail. I have spoken to SuSE
Friday and will be back onto them Monday. I'll let you know if i get
anywhere.
