    Hi
My old ram was a 1GB and i got a 2GB .It was in the 2nd slot from the top(one beneath).Just the one RAM.I got it from Mr Memory and their specs say the 2GB i got will work on my acer aspire 5100
If i take the HARD DRIVE out and switch it on the power light comes on and stays on.The D2 led (media light) with the little book symbol does not come "on"Then when i put the HDD back in the d2 led stays "on" all the time. The screen stays black all the time. Now when i turn the power off and back on the D2 led only comes on for 3 seconds again

White screen but plugin monitor works. is it the screen?

So you PHYSICALLY checked the connection of the Video Cable, TO the motherboard, TO the screen Inverter, and TO the back of the LCD screen?

Visual inspection will NOT do. If either motherboard connector, or LCD screen connector is loose, the width of this letter -> I < you won't see it, and it will affect the video signal.

The Video Cable connects to the motherboard under the Middle Cover, above the F4 and F5 key on the Keyboard. (Left edge of F4 key over to middle of F5 key)

[Middle Cover is Acer speak for Switch Cover. The cover strip above the Keyboard, and below the LCD screen ]

http://www.laptops-we-r.com/prestashop/aspire-5100-parts/109-acer-

Click on the view to enlarge. Top left side connects to the LCD screen. Rectangular Black connector with thick round cable, at the bottom, connects to the motherboard. Small cable coming off at the bottom, connects to the screen Inverter ]

From the motherboard connector the Video Cable routes up under the left Hinge, and into the Display Assembly. It then connects to the screen Inverter, and LCD screen.

From normal opening, and closing of the laptop, repeatedly, the Video Cable may become pinched.
This can lead to loose connections.

It can also lead to damage of the Video Cable.
If the sheath of the cable shows apparent signs of damage, the tiny wires inside may be damaged also.
Stretched/Broken

This means to ENSURE that the Video Cable is NOT the problem, a continuity test needs to be performed on all of the Video Cable's wires. (OHMS)
If an economical multimeter ($5 to $12) is not available, suggestion is to take it down to the nearest 'Mom and Pop' computer store, and have them check it. Labor charge should only be a few bucks.

Video Cable checks out it's on to the screen Inverter, for the diagnoses.

[NOTE*
This diagnoses is for an Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook PC. Uses a single (1) CCFL for a Backlight, and has a screen Inverter. Laptops that use LED's for a Backlight generally do not use a screen Inverter]

Did you test the screen Inverter, or replace it?

http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-5100-Inverter-PK070005U00/dp/B005F1N5O2

http://www.fonerbooks.com/test.htm

NOTE*
Takes a sensitive multimeter. Read fairly expensive.

Primer;

An LCD screen cannot produce light by itself,

http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/NA_Optical/Systems/BehindTheScenes/Optics101/

Click on the monitor. Suggest start out with your audio turned down ]

It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight can be a CCFL, (Or two of them), or a series of LED's.
(Light Emitting Diode)
The Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook PC uses a single (1) CCFL.

A CCFL is a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

[Average thickness is 2mm. That is a little larger than 1/16th of an Inch.
Average length is almost as long, as the LCD screen is in height,

http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2007/12/09/replace-laptop-backlight-ccfl-lamp/ ]

A screen Inverter is used to convert the power (Electricity) from the laptop, for the LCD screen, and Backlight.

90 PERCENT OF THE TIME the fault is a bad screen Inverter.

Primer over.

If the screen Inverter is good, the LCD screen is bad.
Replace.

[The LCD screen, and the screen Inverter are a MATCHED unit.
When purchasing make sure you get the correct screen Inverter, or LCD screen ]

Acer red light battery

1) http://www.insidemylaptop.com/remove-lcd-screen-replace-inverter-board-acer-aspire-5100-laptop/

Yes, I know. Aspire 5100 series of Notebook PC, not the Aspire 5230 series. I am looking at the Service Manual for the Aspire 5230 series right now, and the above link is a good basic pictorial guide.

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-acer

Drop down to the subheading - Aspire 1200. (1200 in Blue)
Go down to the 6th line, scroll across, and left-click on 5230 in blue.
(Takes few seconds before the first page comes up.
In the PDF file page number box at the top, go to Page 119)

2) If you mess up with the connection of the LCD Panel Cable, to the LCD Panel, (On back), your laptop will not power up.
Those tiny contact pins on that cable's connector, must line up exactly, and be plugged in tightly to the LCD Panel.
Not plugged in tightly? You won't see it visually. You have to physically check.

Also use the old tape that was there, to tape over the connector once installed, on the back of the LCD Panel.
Ripped it all the way off? Oops! Use some new tape. (Not duct tape, scotch tape, or medical tape. Box tape with strands in it)

3) Connector of LCD Panel Cable, connected tightly into motherboard?

4) Screen Inverter wires connected? Connectors are keyed differently from each other, BUT, are they connected correctly?

5) Why was the LCD Panel replaced? Damaged? Did the LCD Panel Cable receive damage? Did you perform a cursory visual inspection of it's sheath, at least? Sheath showed ANY damage, did you perform a continuity check of each wire in the cable, with a multimeter set to Ohm's? (LCD Panel Cable unplugged from motherboard, and LCD Panel, of course)

6) If there was damage, did the screen Inverter receive damage?

7) Connect the LCD Panel Cable's ground wire/s back to THE ground screw/s? Good bright clean connection area for those eyelet ground terminal/s?

8) Did you crossover the new LCD Panel to the old LCD Panel, to make sure it is a direct replacement?
NOTE*
A screen Inverter, and an LCD screen, (LCD Panel for Acer), are a MATCHED unit.

9) AC adapter plugged into power, and plugged into laptop, along with the battery?

Post back in a Comment, and if none of the above is the problem, we'll go on from there.

joecoolvette

My acer aspire bl51 doesnt open up at all, the power turns on , but there is a black screen what can I do to remedy this?

Hi liquidblue7,

If you see power lights but nothing appears on the screen, it could be a "POST" (Power-on Self Test) problem or simply LCD problem.

Here are some steps that you can try.

1. Remove the battery and the ac adapter then press the power button for at least 20 seconds to drain electric charges left from the system. (You may need to repeat this step to get it work.)

2. If above step doesn't work, try to plug in an external monitor and see if you get display from the external monitor. You may need to press the Fn + F10 or F6, depends on the key designed on the keyboard to toggle between displays.

3. If you get display from the external monitor, I'm sure your having problem with the LCD components. In this case, check and replace faulty LCD backlight, LCD cable or LCD inverter. The LCD inverter is often a culprit.

4. Try to reinsert the memory module/s (RAM) of the unit, try using one RAM at a time to see if it works. A faulty RAM will cause the issue not to POST.

5. If reinserting the RAM doesn't help, most likely your motherboard needs to be replaced.

Hope this helps.

You need to replace the inverter board.
Here is a tutorial for the Aspire 5100 which should be a good guide as to how to replace the inverter board on your laptop.

copy and paste the complete link into your browser.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.

Try hitting the Function key and then whichever key on your keyboard swaps monitors. On mine, it is Function + F8. Also try hitting the little switch a few times that gets pressed when you close the lid.
