1. Restart the computer.
2. Keep tapping the F10 key when the Compaq logo appears. BIOS Setup Utility.
3. Select the Diagnostic tab.
4. Select the "hard drive self test" option and press enter to perform the test. Note: This test takes atleast 40 minutes. This will take you to

Pass - The hard drive is not damaged.
Fail - The hard drive is damaged and may need to be replaced.

I have the exact same issue with an HP Slimline s3330f. Looks like HP is going to send out a recovery disc and a new hard drive. They will first ask you to preform the following tests:

pressing F10 (system BIOS) select the primary hard drive and run both the short and extended hard drive tests.

pressing F9 on startup (diagnostic utility) Hard Drive passed but there is a boot record error code BIOHD-5

Here is a thread in a forum that talks about your error. It seems to be a Hard Drive Error. Might need to replace it.

We have an hp pavilion with a BIOHD-B error...any suggestions?

BIOHD-B or 8 is Basic Input Output Hard Drive, this is a sign that your hardrive is on its way out, and you need to back up all of the contents as soon as possible.

The faults that cause this error are generally the drive electronics not reading and sending the data properly, or the phisical working of the hardrive not reading the data properly therefore not sending in correctly. The way to check for this is if you hear any slight clunking or clicking noises coming from the harddrive when in use, at the moment they could be quite quiet and hardly noticeable, but will progressively get worse.
My advise is to back up the drive and try a low level format, and see if that fixes the problem or buy a new Hard drive. You can download a low level format tool fron this link:

I have an HP Pavilion Elite m9150f desktop PC. I'm getting ''Boot Path error code BIOHD-5 Failed''.

Could be one of two things: either the BIOS has lost the settings for the hard drive, which is uncommon unless the PC is more than 5 years old or been electrically shocked, or the hard drive is going bad. hard drives usually only last about 3-5 years on average. Western Digital even less.

Error Message BIOHD-4

I had this with a 3 week old HP (and a BIOHD-8 as well)

A temp fix at least, is to use knoppix, go to the partition program, and delete the main partition, and then add a new one  formatted to NTFS. You can then use the recovery discs.

You should also be able to access the drive via knoppix to recover data before you delete the partition, either to flash storage or across a network. I managed to recover about 55gb of data that way (I do a lot of video work)
