Perpetual Media Compatibility List

By paulrmc - usenet poster

I started a topic over at Yahoo Group about media compatibility and so
far we had few responses. The media mentioned and results are:

(Thom Dodge)
1. TDK - (no type) - produced some garbled video
(Jason and Michelle)
1. Verbatim - (RW) - great results
2. Memorex- (RW) - mixed results - one of them causes the recording to
stop 15 minutes through
(Graham)
1. Memorex - (R, 4x) - excellent
2. Fuji - (R, 2x) - excellent
3. Fuji - (RW, 2x) - excellent

I am relatively inexperienced recording dvd's so here are my results
and some explanations:
1. Fortis - (R) - good, the media was in the box with the recorder
2. Fortis - (RW) - excellent, same as above
3. Sony - (RW) - recording good but no chase play, media probably only
1x speed
4. Verbatim (RW, 2x) - great, no problems so far
5. Laser (R) - excellent results, extremely cheap media
Feel free to add to the list!

I was recording the Olympics the other night and discovered that Sony
-RW (1x) has gone bad. This was only 3rd or 4th recording on the disc.
The disc shows some damage to the recording side similar to DVD rot.
So, brand name doesn't mean great disc after all.

Here is what I have used so far.

Memorex (rw, 2x) No problems
Memorex (r, 4x) No Problems
Sony (r, 4x) No problems
GQ (r, 4x) No Problems - very cheap found at Fry's Electronics and
Outpost.com

As I do not have a DVD writable drive in my computer I have not used
much RW.
The -r that I have tried have all worked in my 6 year old DVD player
with no issues.
The -rw will not work in old DVD player so most everything I have done
has been to -R media only.

I've got new addition to the list.
Today I bought a pack of 10 Laser DVD-RW. Those are el cheapo discs but
I burned hundreds of Laser cd-r's, never had a problem so I thought I'd
give them a go. The results were fantastic, tried few of them just to
be sure and they all recorded and played nicely. Chase play is
supported too. All that comes at $18.95 Australian, at Strathfield.
So addition to the list is:

Laser - (RW, 2x) - excellent

Well, actually, I do use the TDK 2x -RW most of the time. The garbled
video was not from the disk, but in the recorder. I can verify this,
as there are no errors written to the disk. At any rate, the same disk
(written over) does not have garbled video. I still have 100% success
with this media.

Memorex 2x-RW - Generally good results as well.

Fuji 2x -RW (The one that came with the recorder) - good results here
too.

Ritek 2x-RW from CDRDVDRMEDIA.COM, in a 50 pack - complete garbage.
About 1 out of 3 disks record with no problems. Any money I saved
buying this refuse over TDK was lost in the bad media.
