This is not a corrupted (software damage) issue - you have a platten error (physical damage).
Replacement is your only option.
Any SATA drive will work.

Thanks for using FixYa!!

Unfortunately, you will need a new hard drive. i would match the capacity of the original drive to be safe. this hard drive seems to be in a cryogenic state of limbo. its done.

Sounds like you lost your hard drive.

Check to make sure hard drive is secure.
Check connections to hard drive.
Go into setup make sure hdd storage is on & not locked.
If still not working your drive is more than likely bad.

Hope this helped. Please rate. Good Luck.

This happened to my friend PS3 also. He put it into another PS3 and
reformatted it and then when he got home and put it back into his it
asked him to reformat again and this did the trick. It's been working
    ever since.

If that doesn't work, try this also

turn on ps3 press x to restore on 0 % quikly pull out hdd. then wait
may take up to an hour a message will come up to formate hdd. put hdd
back in and press yes to format this process worked with in secounds
for me but can take longer. it does work but you will lose all saved
stuff but online stats will still be on the system. good luck hope it
    works for u to

    One more solution:

put ur ps3 HDD in your laptop and run ur recovery
cd and it will format you disk... or you can buy a new HDD for cheap on
amazon u can get 100 GB to 160 GB for less than 100 dollars sony will
charge 150 ) to fix ur problem.... or you can buy an external hard
drive the USB ones and format ur HDD... good luck

This is one of the experts solution posted on fixya:

Our hard drive froze and we got an error message "file system
corrupted". It would nor reformat. After reading the solutions here, we
first removed the hard drive but that did not work because we simply
got a "hard drive missing" error. So the key is to START the console,
then remove the HARD DRIVE, then wait for the RE-FORMAT instructions.
    This worked like a charm.

Hello, if it's corrupted and formatting does not work you will need to purchase another. They sell for $20-$45 on ebay.

How old is your unit? If it still under warranty I would get it serviced. Your hard drive is failing and needs to be replaced.

    1. Power Off the PS3 via the power switch in back and power back on w/switch.

    2. Hold Power Button on the Front until you hear 3 beeps.

    3. Then go through the initial setup and then run a full Format
via System > Format. (will take approx 3 1/1 hours). You may need to
have our AV cables ready if your using HDMI (in case HDMI isn’t
    detected after initial reset).

    4. Restore your backup you made prior to doing factory/hard reset (optional, if you created a backup).

Can not create internal memory card, whenever I try I returned back to the screen that says name a internal memory card.

http://ps3explained.com/intermediate/internal-memory-cards/
Create an Internal Memory Card on the PLAYSTATION 3 system HDD as follows:

1. Navigate to [Memory Card Utility (PS/PS2)] under [Game] on the XMB.
2. Press “X” to bring up the “New Internal Memory Card” option.
3. Tell the PLAYSTATION 3 which format you want it to create. PS2 or PS1.
4. Highlight “OK” and press “X” to finish creating the memory card.

Note that you can make new saves on this card while playing PS2 or PS1 games on the PS3, but it does not allow you to transfer saves from a physical memory card to the PS3's HDD. You need the memory card adapter to do that.

Problem with the laser it sounds like. If you still have the system apart with the dvd drive out, go ahead and replace the laser. You can usually find them on Ebay.

AFTER WORKING FOR A YEAR, PLAYING BOTH GAMES AND BLUE RAY MOVIES, MY PLAYSTATION 3 WILL NOT PLAY MOVIES. WHEN A BLUE RAY DVD IS INSERTED IT BRIEFLY SHOWS THE TITLE ON THE TV SCREEN AND THEN THE SCREEN GOES...

1. Turn off the ps3.
2. press down on the on/off button on the front of ps3 while turning on the button from the back. DO not let it go until you hear 2 beeps and will show a red light.
3. press the on/off button again and do not let it go until you hear 1 beep, paused, and two beeps. Let it go.
4. There should be a prompt asking you what to do. If you have hdmi, answer all the question yes etc.
5 there should be a menu list asking what you need done.. setting wise..

6. Choose the # 3rd list (not sure how many they were).
7. IF it tells you that your data is corrupted etc.. just click ok
8. wait till progress ends ( if it tells your your data is corrupted again, just click ok again).
9. It's going to do some loading again...
10.. end of restoring and you should see your ps3 menu

PS3 wont load or play games, Just a blank screen.....

Try playing a Demo game, if you dont have any download it from playstation network. The point is just to force the sytem to play games and if you notice, movies and games are listed under a different folder in the icon's list, so playing a demo game will force the system to play the game and you should be able to play your games fine after that,. Thing is that a game's info might've got stuck in freeze mode when the system was shut off unproperly while a game disk was still inside, that's all. Good luck, dont wanna see any PS3 comrades suffering the unspeakable horridness of not been able to play games. Be strong my friend.
