Question about Projection Televisions

I've owned the VPL - AW10 Sony Bravia Projector since June of 2008. Every once in a while I'll be watching a movie and ten minutes in - the image will lose its brightness, almost as if someone placed a cover over the lens. I replaced my filter with my backup and would turn it on and the image would bounce back and forth between very brillant and bright images to again complete loss of brightness and remain for an hour - then return to bright - then dim away again - WHAT"S HAPPENING HERE? Is the internal system malfunctioning - Perhaps a situation with the bulb? I believe I've tried everything (made adjustments to brightness, color, changed the modes from Cinema-Dynamic-User1,2,3) and the image would still not change. I have the projector hooked up through HDMI. When I turn on the Blue-ray player and the Projector I can hear a noticable clicking from within the projector as it seems to be transitioning to 24p mode and the image will get bright, then dim to what almost seems like a stand-by mode - then get bright again and keep itself that way (this is when its working). But, every once in a while - the image will be dimmed, and remain that way to the point of frustration. Please, I would really appreciate a response on how I can get this figured out, thank you very much!

You probably have a short in the connection leading to the bulb that is causing to go out like it is. Do not open it unless you want to void your warranty, but if you do not care about it, and you think you might know how to fix it, then go head and open it and look for any loose connections near the bulb and around. If you find any, then solder them back to where they came from. But if you do care about you warranty, and still have a receipt for it, then your best bet would be to return

Without seeing the problem and experimenting with the actual boards, I can't say for sure. What I would suggest though, is to have this unit in for warranty service. It is important to note to the service center that the problem is intermittant.

As far as what is happening, there are two possibilties that I have seen that will have these symptoms.

1) Defective bulb. These bulbs have lifetimes too and if you have used the machine for hundreds of hours, the bulb may need to be replaced. You should be able to read the lamp hours throught the menus. Post that number here if you can.

2) The ballast has a defect. This is the part of the projector that "fires" the lamp. If this is defective, the voltage presented to the lamp may not be what is required for full brightness. Since the brightness changes with time, it is possible that there is a simple bad connection inside the ballast.

Please note that typically, lamps are not covered under warranty, but hte ballast is. Rather than waste money on a lamp that may not completely resolve the problem, I would recommend warranty service using the lamp that is currently showing the problem.

Keep us posted,
Dan

On the main board there is a control capacitor thats big fat black colur.nubmer of the capacitor is C565jc that has to be replaced.as that capacitor controls all the brightness and sharpness if that capacitor goes weak this happens.

Well, you should stop messing with it. It is still under the manufacturer's warranty, so call the company you bought it from first and then call the manufacturer if they won't deal with it and they can take care of it rather than you go through all of the trouble.

Because the unit is still under warranty I would definitely recommend having it sent into your nearest authorized sony service center. If you need further assistance please let me know. Also please take a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly.
Thank you,
Lee

Here is the link to inquire about repair.
besides cleaning filter and ventilation holes(intake). and replacing the lamp there is nothing else that you as a user can do, but being that it is so new I highly recommend having it serviced under warranty.
    Thanks you,
    Lee

Will set be campatable after June with the new high def?

Your set is HDTV-ready....

With an HDTV-ready set you’ll need an external digital tuner to watch HDTV programming.

However, if you have high-definition cable or satellite service you can watch those HDTV stations right now on your HDTV-ready set, no extra tuner needed.

which means you will still need a converter box if you use an antenna signal.
