Proscan PSVR 81 VCR appears to have tracking problem

Bought used Proscan PSVR81 VCR. No manual, no remote control.

VCR was working fine. One day pulley for drive belt fell off, drive belt came lose and a tape got all unwound inside the unit. Opened unit, removed tape, put pully and belt back. The VCR mechanism works, but now cannot get clear picture.when playing tape. Audio is fine, but video have streaking lines across picture as would be when poor trackin occurs. Can't find any tracking control.

If the fast forward button is pressed, the video appears perfect at the instant just before it fast forwards. Otherwise video not working properly. Is there an alignment procedure to perform when replacing belt?

SOURCE: The unit will fast forward and rewind, but won't play

This is a problem with the process called 'tape loading' - pulling the tape loop out of the cassette and wrapping it around the spinning video drum, engaging the capstan and pinch roller and reel rotation. Check all the belts above and below the deck. Belts can appear to be firm but if they do not return immediately to their relaxed length when you stretch them 25%, they will need to be replaced. With the cover off, observe the behavior when you hit play. (You may need to put a piece of cardboard over the cassette to block external light from interfering with the start/end tape sensors). Assuming this is a basic VCR (no instant start features), you should see: 1. The video head drum begins to spin. 2. the roller guides move smoothly on the tracks, wind the tape around the drum, and stop snuggly pressed against the 'V-stopper' at the end of the tracks. 3. The pinch roller moves into position and presses the tape against the capstan. 4. The tape begins to move and is wound up by the takeup reel. 5. The picture and sound appear on the TV. With a 'rapid or quick start' (or it may be called something else) transport, the tape moves to a half-loaded position when the cassette is inserted. This is at an intermediate position partially pulled out of the cassette but not wrapped around the drum. On VCRs with a real-time counter and/or index search capabilities, the tape will be in contact with the control head. With an 'instant start' transport, the tape will fully load around the spinning drum when the cassette is inserted but the capstan will not engage and no tension will be applied to the tape until you press PLAY or REC. (After about 5 minutes, the drum will stop and it may unload to the half loaded or unloaded position.) Note that for VCRs with a real-time counter and/or index search capabilities, the tape must be in contact with the control head (but not the video heads) for all relevant modes. These VCRs (which include many modern units) must therefore pull the tape at least partly out of the cassette. In all cases, the completion of the sequence results in approximately the same mechanical configuration during PLAY. Several likely possibilities when it shuts down: 1. Everything occurs as above, picture and sound appear for a few seconds, but then the VCR unloads the tape, ejects the cassette, goes into REW mode, stops, or shuts off. Two common causes: The takeup reel does not turn and tape spills into the machine. This is sensed by the microcontroller which aborts record or play and attempts to save your valuable cassette. Most likely cause: old/dirty idler tire. As a test, turn the idler tire inside-out. The fresh surface will now work well enough to confirm this diagnosis and will continue working long enough for your replacement idler tire to arrive. See the section: "General guide to VCR cleaning and rubber parts replacement". The takeup reel is turning properly but

SOURCE: My VCR is playing too fast

try recording on a blank tape and setting the tape speed to SP (standard play). you should also see options for (LP-long play) and SLP (super long play). I think your machine is stuck on SLP option. if no-go, look for a manual on the web.

Most VCR's have manual tracking. Generally it will use a set of keys on the remote used by another function. Often the channel up down keys! This will also apply to the controls on the video itself.

Bad tracking is also caused by dirt one the heads or tape path. So clean the machine first before adjusting the tracking.

Where is the tracking on this VCR toshiba w403?

On this unit there is no manual tracking button - it's done automatically by a special circuit that uses the special signal from the tracks themselves. If the tracking is bad then the heads are dirty and they don't pick that special signal.
Clean them with a special cleaning tape. If you can't source one the unit will have to be dismantled and the 4 heads will have to be manually cleaned with a q-tip moist with alcohol.

Hi. I am using a Panasonic 4 Head Hi-Fi Stereo Omnivivion to convert VHS tapes to DVD. It appears that the tracking needs adjusted, but I do not see anything on the unit to do this. Can you help?

Normally the tracking control is on the remote control. Some models do use the up & down channel selectors on either the remote or the front panel of the VCR. If you don't have the remote, the best way to test if it is these controls on the front panel, is to start a video playing a hold down the up or down key and watch to see what happens. If they operate the tracking, the tracking should go way off (do it on a video that is tracking well when first playing).
PS don't forget to clean the video head every so often (Servisol video 40 spray is best for that).

Picture bounces up and down

All new VCR's are auto tracking however, you should be able to manually track it using your remote, or there are a few reasons that the auto track can fail, the tape may have worn or ragged edges which means that the control head cannot get a clean reading, the control head may itself need cleaning or the tape path requires adjustments, adjusting the guides really needs to be done by a technician as a reference tape is used, or that the heads are low and a good video signal cannot be obtained to gain a reference point....Phil

I just had the same problem and found a solution on the internet that worked. Hopefully you still have the VCR's remote control. Press and hold either the on/off, VCR1 or VCR2 button on the remote. I pressed the VCR1 button and held it for about 5-7 seconds. It released the lock and worked fine afterwards. The lock is some kind of childlock devise.
